As Austin neighborhood groups rally to save our city pools, the folks at "Friends of Shipe Park" are having a Party, and a Rally to Save the Pool, at the same time!
This Saturday, June 25th from 4-6 pm. Sponsored by the Hyde Park Neighborhood Association, it's the annual summer opening party featuring live music, burgers (both meat and vegetarian), pot luck dishes, snow cones, and much more.
The kids will have plenty of room to play. The park has a play scape, swings, a basket ball court, tennis courts and of course a swimming pool. Don't forget the little ones, because we have a wading pool too!
Shipe Park is located at 4400 Avenue G, Austin TX 78751, in the middle of the lovely Hyde Park neighborhood. Shipe Pool will be the focal point of the festivities.
Party attendees will also get a sneak peak at the new Shipe Park Mosaic Mural Project. For those of you who don't know, the mural will be a permanent fine arts installation on the pump house wall.
The rally portion of the day is going to be a show of support for all neighborhood parks and pools facing closure from city budget cuts. The goal of the rally will be to raise awareness of the proposal to close eight neighborhood pools across the city next summer.
You will be invited to sign a petition, join the committee to save the pool, and of course celebrate Shipe Pool as a cherished neighborhood resource and center of our community.
So come on down and bring your ideas on how to keep Shipe Pool and all our Austin pools and parks open for future generations, and join us for a really great time!
**"Friends of Shipe Park" is a group of volunteers and neighborhood leaders dedicated to maintaining and improving Shipe Park and Pools. Formed in 2008, the group has organized large scale volunteer efforts to benefit Shipe Park and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for park improvements and beautification efforts including the Shipe Park Mosaic Mural.

It's been some time since I last blogged about fitness, so I'm a little rusty. I was kind of lazy during the holiday season and my waistline and fitness level show it. But here it is a new year and I've summoned the will to get back into shape. Plus, I have a new motivator: The Capital 10K held March 27 in lovely downtown Austin Texas .
I began training in earnest Sunday January 30th. I kicked off my new quest by running 3 miles through Hyde Park. It was 77 degrees out and my lungs felt like they were going to explode. My legs felt great for about a mile, then they began feeling like lead. I must confess, I had to walk part of it. At the end of the run all I could think was "I'm so out of shape". I managed one other street run Wednesday and a treadmill session Saturday morning. Both were painful and sluggish.
I'm now into my second week of training. I started this week off with a Sunday trail run at Lady Bird Lake with Isabelle. We ran/walked a total of 4 miles. I felt pretty good and could have opened it up a little more if I were running alone, but the bonding time with Isabelle more than made up for it. She did pretty good, with only a minimal amount of whining. Rhonda went as well, but she's in such good shape that she took off and left us in the dust. We're going to try to make Sunday runs at Lady Bird Lake a new family date.
Tuesday evening I ran 3 miles on the treadmill and actually felt pretty good. I'll do a treadmill session tonight and try to open it up a bit and then I'll do one more slow 3 mile run Saturday morning. I'm still breaking myself in the rest of this week.
The race is exactly 6 weeks from this Sunday so it's time to get serious. I'm going to start a training program designed by Rhonda. As most of you know, she is a fitness fanatic and an aspiring personal trainer, so I'm going to put myself at her mercy. Wish me luck!
My goals for this quest are simple: finish the Capital 10K in good form and be healthy. As always, thank you for following my quest!
Phillip
People say that losing weight is no walk in the park. When I hear that I think, yeah, that's the problem. ~Chris Adams

Mark Your Calendars: Saturday, March 5th, 1-5 pm. It's My Park Day 2011! I'll be in Shipe Park. Come Join me!
Shipe Park is located in the heart of the historic Hyde Park neighborhood, in the central area of Austin Texas. Just google map 44th and Avenue F. and you'll find us.
In celebration of Austin Parks Foundation's It's My Park Day, Hyde Park neighbors and friends, and volunteers from around the city will participate in the annual clean-up and landscaping day at Shipe Park. Last year volunteers of all ages joined in the fun to honor our park.
On this great day we will improve the park by spreading mulch, landscaping, removing invasive plant species and debris, aerating and fertilizing the field, beautifying the interior pool areas, spiffing up the play-scape, and anything else we can think of to make Shipe Park a better place.
Hosted this year by the "Friends of Shipe Park", we will also have an info booth for the recently approved public art project - a ceramic mosaic mural to be installed on the pump house wall of Shipe Pool.
HOW TO VOLUNTEER
As a volunteer, you can help us build upon last year's successful efforts. Please register online. Just go to the Austin Parks Foundation web site at: http://austinparks.org. If you are able to bring snacks or treats they will be most welcome. You may also contact this year's Project Leaders, Phillip Baird (phillipdbaird@gmail.com) & Rhonda Baird (rhondabaird@gmail.com), or Mark L Fishman (mlfishman@gmail.com) Hyde Park Neighborhood Association's Shipe Park Committee Chair.
FREE T-SHIRTS & LIVE MUSIC
All volunteers who are pre-registered will get a free T-shirt, so be sure to register early and indicate your size. And, there will be live music to keep the energy level high!
CREW LEADERS NEEDED
In addition to general worker bees, organizers are looking for people willing to serve as crew leaders for activities including: sign-in & refreshments table, creek clean-up, plant maintenance/removal, spreading mulch, etc. etc. Send Phillip & Rhonda an e-mail if you are interested in serving as the leader of one of these activities.
It's going to be a great day of fun, food, music and communtiy service. I can't wait. I hope to see you there!

When many buyers in Austin describe their dream homes, they will mention the Hyde Park neighborhood. Homes for sale in Hyde Park and the 78751 zip code that surrounds the neighborhood are located near the University of Texas and have a walkable, friendly vibe that attracts buyers from all walks of life.
In addition to the University of Texas at Austin, other major employers are near the Hyde Park neighborhood. Parts of the neighborhood are walking distance to St. David's Medical Center off of 32nd Street, and the State of Texas has facilities in two locations nearby, just a short drive to either downtown or the 45th Street / Triangle area.
I've put together a constantly updated list of available homes for sale in Hyde Park, Austin TX and the surrounding 78751 zip code. The homes are largely craftsman in style but also include some interesting older stone fascia homes. I'm excited to show these Hyde Park homes for sale to you so contact me at the links below or call 512-736-3353 for more information.
