Ducks and Divas in College Station

Stephanie Hansson,ABR,CRS: Real Estate Agent in College Station, TX

rubber duck derbyThis weekend, May 28, 2011, you are invited to enjoy ducks and divas in College Station. The city's free Starlight Music Series will be presenting music by Austin-based The Trishas at the Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater. The Trishas are a quartet of very talented vocalists that bring a soulful sound tinged with hints of country, bluegrass and blues for a sound that has to be heard to be believed. Their special guest for the evening will be Leannasaurus Rex, another local Texas band providing a mixture of blues, rock and country.

While you enjoy the free live music, you can help raise money for Children's Museum of Brazos Valley by adopting rubber duckies to race in the 2nd annual Great Texas Rubber Ducky Derby. If your adopted duck wins the race, you could win a prize. First place will receive a Polaris ATV (worth $4000), second place will receive a getaway package that includes tickets to Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor and the adopted parents of the third through 50th ducks to cross the finish line will receive a great prize from local College Station businesses. It only costs $10 per duck, $50 for six or $100 for a set of 12 quackers. The derby will be held at the Wolf Pen Creek.

Admission to the Starlight Music Series is absolutely free. Everyone is invited to bring their own food, blankets and/or lawn chairs to enjoy the show in comfort. Just make sure to leave the glass containers at home and keep the coolers to no more than 48 quarts in size. Bring the family down to Wolf Pen Creek on May 28, 2011 to enjoy ducks and divas in College Station. Gates will open at 6pm. The show begins at 7pm. You're guaranteed to have a great time!

Here is the second installment of this three part series, where we will look at places that parents can take their younger kids for a day out.

The Park

With over 50 different parks in College Station, you are never far away from an afternoon of fun. Each park offers a different set of activities for the family to enjoy, such as: jungle gyms, slides, swings, basketball courts, baseball/softball courts, walking trails, and even disc golf. With so much to do, it is no wonder the city takes such pride in their parks. The College Station Parks and Recreation Department's mission statement pretty much says it all about their parks, "To provide a diversity of facilities and leisure services which are geographically and demographically accessible to our citizens."

Here are a feAnderson Parkw of the parks I recommend:

1. Anderson Park- This park was initially created to alleviate the overcrowding of soccer fields in College Station. It now contains five youth soccer fields of various sizes, along with two basketball courts, a playground, a shelter with rest rooms, and parking for 30 cars. With tons of room, this is the perfect place for the kids to go and get plenty of exercise and sun!

2. Lemontree Park- There is plenty to do here, with a half basketball court, girl's lighted softball fields, ¾ mile concrete jogging exercise trail, playground, open play area that is great for football or soccer, picnic units, pedestrian bridge, and a 30 car parking lot. There is even a nature trail that leads right through the disc golf course!Wolf Pen Creek Park & Amphitheater

3. Wolf Pen Creek Park & Amphitheater- Come here during the day and enjoy the 9 hole disc golf course, playgrounds, and bike/walking trails that lead all through the park. Also, keep an eye out for showtime listings, and bring the whole family to come enjoy a live concert or performance while relaxing on the hill.

Next time, we will look at some of the Entertainment Facilities around town that are great for the kids.
