I have a dream . . .
That one's already taken. But it captures the sentiment.
I've been toying with this idea now for about 10-15 years. I want to start a very unique school that combines our heritage or pioneer living skills with modern green energy technologies.
This would be a place where individuals and families could come and spend a week-end or a week or two learning all kinds of skills and crafts in a setting that is more than a "day camp" or tourist village.
This is an original pioneer era log barn still standing within 80 miles of Dallas!
We'd teach all the traditional skills and crafts, such as soap making, weaving, iron work/black-smithing, furniture making, etc. In addition, we'd go a bit beyond that and teach traditional home building with logs and timber. Then, for the coup de gras, we'd offer courses in powering your home with solar, wind, water power.
Now any of those skills can be taught/learned almost anywhere, but almost always in a classroom setting or in a spectator role. What would make this unique is that everything would be done on-site over the course of several days in an authentic setting. Similar to Williamsburg, except you get to stay at the site.
What gave me the idea was I read an article regarding the John C. Campbell Folk School near Ashville, NC. They do something similar except they don't do the energy part of it. They are the only school in the US that currently is set up along these lines.
I own a couple of hundred acres in the historic gateway to Texas, Fannin County. We're within driving distance of all the Metroplex and have quite a bit of history and nature to offer.
I have identified about 14 pioneer era log structures that are still standing that I'm collecting and will be restoring for use in the school. In addition to all this, we'd be building the other buildings with the help of students as part of their course work. We'd have individual cottages, guys and girls bunk-houses or camping facilities in addition to the other buildings.
I'll be needing people to teach a whole list of skills as well as students. I'm not sure when I'll get this going, but what do you think, sound interesting?
