While mowing the yard this week I spotted this unusual little fellow . I was first attracted by the beautiful iridescent colors of his "amour".....But until I put on my glasses I didn't realize this beetle had armour and among other things... he bears a wicked looking Rhino type horn on his head. I have seen larger but much plainer beetles with horns before, but none as handsome as this guy. This is one of the little pleasures we enjoy in our little country setting in Robinson County, Texas. You really never know what is going to crawl , walk, or fly into the neighborhood! If you are a nature lover Robinson County is heaven.

The oil and gas boom in Robertson County Texas continues to have a positive effect on the local communities. There has been quite a housing shortage due to the increased number of petroleum employees working and visiting the area. As a result there is a new Hoilday Inn Express going up on the north end Hearne on Hwy 6.
Looks like it will be a convenient location for those visiting the area!

This giant cutter ant (harvester ants) mound is located just outside Wheelock Texas on FM 391. These ants are difficult to control for two reasons. 1.) It is suggested that they are a main food for Texas Horn Toads which are quickly disappearing, and some wildlife experts suggest leaving the ants alone for that reason . 2.) They are just darn hard to kill and control. These ants have gigantic underground colonies where at a certain depth they grow and harvest a fungus on decaying vegetation. These colonies have many access points and the colonies can present a hazard , as when a car or tractor drives over them the huge cavern could collapse. Also the ants can strip an entire garden or tree in only a day or so when the ants are left unchecked.
To me it appears that this colony goes all the way under the highway and offers access holes on both sides of the road! -----
See the reddish dirt.

The city of Hearne is known as the Sunflower Capitol of Texas. And it isn't difficult to figure out why... if you just take a ride on a nice sunny day. I don't know for sure how many varieties of sunflowers there are , but the Hearne area seems to have a number of varieties. It is a known fact that if you want some to appear, just plow up some ground and they will do just that. They come up voluntarily in our flower beds and we like to leave a few of them for color.
