There is an old time feeling that resonates from the state of Texas, with the city of San Antonio well developed from the past, with several qualities of the older years. The 1900’s have seen extreme urbanization and development of San Antonio, with several different preservation and renovation efforts currently in place to ensure that the various historical districts are able to grow and prosper even today. There are certainly many different communities found within San Antonio, many serving as incorporated towns that have grown well in the economically strong city.
Anyone interested in living in San Antonio is going to take deep consideration into the various incorporated towns throughout the county, with several located within Bexar County. Just seventeen miles from the downtown San Antonio area, Elmendorf plays a large role in the growth and development of the expansive city. Established in 1885 after Henry Elmendorf, the small town began to grow and within 5 years maintained a population of 50 with various venues located throughout, including a hotel serving San Antonio visitors even then.
By 1914, the small incorporated town within San Antonio had rapidly grown to a population of 300, several general stores, and an added cotton gin feeding to the economy within the area. The population remained consistent until the 50’s when there began several fluctuations within the town. Time has served the area well, however, as there is now a booming population of 6,494, with several businesses, homes, and schools located throughout.
The area is now a middle income, lower expense area with a median income of $35,078, just under the county average. The median home value in Elmendorf is around $77,000, well below that of the state, nation, and county. Homes are typically older than the national and state average, with homes from the 1800’s, during the first years of American settlement in San Antonio. The cost of living in the area is also a bit lower than the average in the county and city of San Antonio.
The best quality of Elmendorf to most residents is the peaceful nature of the area with the privacy from the busy metro area of San Antonio. The short commute to downtown San Antonio also adds great quality to the area, with many residents seeking the several yearly events within the big city as well as the various shopping outlets and attractions that continue to emerge within San Antonio.
