Bay Forest spreads out on both sides of of El Dorado Boulevard between Space Center Boulevard and Horsepen Bayou. It is part of the group of neighborhoods called Clear Lake City, in Houston's Bay Area. The Arts Alliance Center at Clear Lake offers week-long art (or art related) classes for children every summer, starting the week after the fourth of July. Instructors are local professional artists and arts instructors who share their experience, skills and enthusiasm with the kids. This year classes will be from July 6 to July 31.

The majority of classes offered are in the visual arts such as Drawing and Painting of all types, Printmaking, Arts Sampler/Mixed Media, Origami, Clay and Fiber Arts. Other choices that your child may prefer include Acting, Guitar, Poetry/Creative Writing, Chess and Hula.

The Center is located across the street from JSC/NASA (Johnson Space Center) on 2000 NASA Parkway (at the corner of Upper Bay Rd),TAACCLNassau Bay, TX 77058. Normally the center is open Tuesday through Saturday.

You may have seen the building, and the 75 foot long water fountain containing seven water spouts that are a memorial to the seven Astronauts from space shuttle Columbia. The fountain faces Johnson Space Center.


The Arts Alliance Center at Clear LakeThe building is a former 2-story bank, enter through the can't-be-missed tall (and heavy) cobalt blue doors. TAACCL is open year round as a community cultural arts center, and the 2 story facility is home to monthly art exhibitions and arts and social events year round.

APOLLO 11 launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 to make history as the first manned mission to land on the Moon. Mission Commander Neil Alden Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene "Buz" Aldrin, Jr. stepped from the Lunar Module onto the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969. Michael Collins, Command Module Pilot, remained in orbit around the moon in the Command Service Module.

The Space Race, with an emphasis on space exploration, between the United States and the Soviet Union was considered by President Kennedy to be a symbol of national prestige, and his goal was to reach the moon before the end of the 1960's. From a speech in May 1961:

"We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too."

In the heart of Bay Area Houston, across the street from Johnson Space Center/NASA, the Mediterraneo Market & Cafe is a restaurant bursting with delicious mediterranean flavors and style. The nonprofit agency Literacy Advance in the Clear Lake area provides free English as a Second Language classes. Volunteers available during the day are needed. Tutors do not need to speak a language other than English, and teaching experience is not required.
