I did a little bit of community service today, but it really didn't feel like work at all. I took off my Realtor hat for a few hours to serve as a judge in the journalism contest at Manvel High School's UIL academic meet. I was a journalism teacher for many years, and spent more than my fair share of weekends hauling kids around the state to academic competitions, serving as a judge when needed, and coordinating UIL events for Alvin ISD. So I was definitely in familiar territory today.

The student entries were really good! It was hard to pick a winner in many instances, and I could tell that the teachers had done an awesome job teaching their students about news writing, feature writing, editorial writing and headline writing.

For those of you who aren't from Texas, UIL stands for University Interscholastic League. It is the governing body that regulates athletic, academic and music competitions throughout the state. They offer academic competitions in math, science, literary criticism, ready writing, speech, debate, theater arts, social studies, journalism and much more. Some of the brightest kids compete in these events, making for some pretty stiff competition.

It was a lot of fun to wear my old UIL hat for a few hours today. But now, I'm wearing my Realtor hat again and must get busy scheduling showings for tomorrow afternoon!
