At the end of last year, I spent some time doing research on Social Media and Word of Mouth Marketing. One of the repeated topics was the importance of Testimonials. It seems Madison Avenue Firms have left the general public cynical in regards to traditional forms of advertising and marketing. So taking the hints from the authors I was reading, I started plugging for Testimonials. In order to make it easy for clients, I even set up a special sub domain that lets them choose their own method of providing it: there is a web form, links to Facebook page for Reviews, links to several websites that offer business listings with reviews, etc.
Clients are representative of the world around - some people are a pleasure to hear from and love working like a team. Others... not so much. A few of our clients treat us like a typical contractor, not caring about any thing except finishing the job on time. And these are the ones who are not responding to requests for Testimonials.
So, I asked my wife - all my ideas get bounced off my wife as she sees things like a consumer and not like a business owner - do you think it would be ethical to offer a coupon for the next service to any one who leav
es a Testimonial? Or how about a Starbuck's Gift Card? Both ideas in her mind send the image that I am trying to buy favorable testimonies, and that it kind of defeats the purpose of having them. If potential clients hear that I offer a discount on the next service, they may call into question existing testimonials.
She has a point. Where would you side? Is it ethical to offer a discount in exchange for a Testimonial? Is it ethical to offer incentives/rewards for them? Even better, is it ethical to Trade Testimonials with other professionals?
