The nonprofit organization HeliOS Project that focuses on giving computers to underprivileged children will be moving to Taylor and relocating from Lakeway. The HeliOS Project was founded in 2005. The city of Taylor gave the nonprofit organization a free, three-year lease on the building located at 307 Ferguson Street according to founding director Ken Starks.
The organization plans to use the 2,200 square-foot building to hold computer classes and for storage. The project is already serving children in the Taylor area. Earlier this month two deserving children were set up with their own computer. To date the organization has given away 1,296 computers to children in the Austin area. The computers are donated to the project from businesses and individuals, and then the organization's staff installs software so that the computers can be given to the children who need them.
The grand opening of the new location in Taylor is set for June 4th, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you need more information call 689-6556 or visit the organizations website at www.heliosinitiative.org.

Herman & Kittle properties, an Indiana-based company, recently applied for an affordable housing tax credit from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to build an affordable housing complex in Taylor for seniors.
The building will be called Main Street Commons and will have 75 units. The building will include an outdoor entertainment and patio area, fitness area, library, covered parking, and a media/theater center. This development will be Taylor's second development for those age 55 and older in the city. However, this will be the first project by Herman & Kittle in Taylor and in Texas. They chose to place an affordable housing development in Taylor due to the demand for this type of housing in the area. Construction of Main Street Commons could begin in early 2012 with units available to rent in 2013, if the project receives the tax credits.
To qualify to live in the 80,000 square foot, four-story building, you must be 55 years or older and have an income level between $15,000 to $35,000 per year.

In today's economy any creation of new jobs is great news, and that is exactly what is expected to happen for the town of Taylor. When looking to buy a new home it is important to move to an area where jobs are available. Eccentrix Technologies LLC is a wireless Internet provider and high-tech provider that has recently relocated to Taylor as of this past December. Previously, the company resided in Coupland.
The move was made possible through the Taylor Economic Development Corporation. Eccentrix Technologies will receive a 10-year loan for $60,000 that will be forgivable from the Economic Development Corporation if certain requirements are met. One of the requirements is that the company create and maintain ten new jobs for Taylor residents. At this time the company currently has nine employees.
Eccentrix Wireless is a division of Eccentrix Technologies and has a lot to offer residents from Bastrop to Bartlett and from Hutto to Rockdale. A few of the services are: home and business networking, commercial IT services, telecommunications, 24-hour tech support and computer repair.

While in Austin for Labor Day weekend, we ventured north to Taylor, Texas which is 17 miles east of Round Rock, Texas and 29 miles northeast of Austin. Taylor is one of many small towns around our country that were built long ago and at one time had a booming economy.
In Taylor's case it was founded in 1876 when the Texas Land Company auctioned lots anticipating the International Great Northern Railroad. The city was named after Edward Moses Taylor, a railroad official. Today the population of the City of Taylor is around 18,500. Taylor is interesting for its historical downtown and with a little imagination could be renovated to quite an interesting Texas town. View the photos below and what do you think?

I feel your pain. There are many events in Austin, Texas, that I've gone to in past, thoroughly enjoyed, but don't go to any longer because it's just such a pain to fight the crowds.
However, this year, if you really want to hear the music, but you don't want to slog your way through masses of people, you have an alternative. Shhhhhhh. Don't tell anybody!
The alternative is a relatively new venue in Taylor, Texas, just a short hop east out of Austin down Highway 79. The Armadillo Hall (run by a former long-time employee of Armadillo World Headquarters of blessed memory) opened up last year in Taylor. They responded to an ad in the Chronicle looking for venues for bands, and were told there were 3 bands looking for a place to play. One thing led to another, and now there are 50 bands playing at Armadillo Hall, Wednesday through Sunday, at the first annual Armadillo Fest. As they say, not in competition with SXSW, but an alternative place for the locals to go and hear some great music.
So, check out the lineup (and the prices! $5.00 cover in advance, $7.00 at the door!, $14.00 for all day on Saturday!). Boogie with the Armadillo! You might find that that sweet, quick drive to Taylor is definitely worth it.
And, when the festival is over, try them out later - they've got big plans!
