Where Were You That Faithful Day?

John Hrisco|RE/MAX Broker,REALTOR®,SFR | NE Tarrant County Real Estate Experts : Real Estate Broker in Keller, TX

Where Were You That Faithful Day?

Where were you that faithful day in September nearly ten years ago? A week from today marks the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on our nation. Do you remember what you were doing that morning that changed the course of history and our nation forever?

I remember where I was, even though I was a licensed REALTOR at the time, I was an aircraft dispatcher (fully time )on duty with a cargo airline located in north Dallas (Addison). We had planes in the air just like many other airlines and companies across the country and the world.

I still remember a comment made to me that morning after the first aircraft hit the World Trade Center by a customer/competitor representative of ours in another part of the country, asking if it was one of our aircraft? She said this because our airline had a couple of accidents in the past and I guess she was trying to be funny or something. I thought to myself if I were not a couple thousand miles away, I would come through the phone and slap her. She later apologized but it had already been said.

It is eerie to think sometimes how things worked out. When that day happened, the day before I had just met the young lady who would four years later become my wife. She also happened to be an aircraft dispatcher too and I was training her that week of the attacks, (strictly business). After the attacks took place and all air flight was grounded for the week. They sent everyone home that week except for my future wife and I. So, I guess because of the circumstances that week, we learned more about each other than one would normally in the course of a normal week. FYI, it was strictly a business relationship for many, many months and we did not even start going out until 2002 sometime. And then, at work, no one even knew we were dating until we announced our engagement in 2004.

By that time, my now wife, who had previously served active duty in the U.S. Air Force before we met, had an opportunity to rejoin the Air Force as a full time reservist, which she is to this day. Since then, she has served two tours in Iraq, and is gone multiple weeks each and every month.

It’s is weird to think sometimes how if that day never happened, would that young lady and I have still got married, would she have rejoined the Air Force? A lot of lives were affected that day in many different ways.

What will you being doing next Sunday 11 September 2011, on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks? I know where I will be.

The City of Watauga, which is a few miles down the road from our house is holding a Special September 11th Memorial Service at the Watauga Fire Station located at 5909 Hightower Drive @ 7:40 p.m. for the Dedication of the World Trade Center Steel Memorial. A Remembrance Service and Candlelight Vigil will follow it. The former Mayor of Fort Worth and Congresswoman Kay Granger will be the Special Guest Speaker.

9/11 Memorial

The City of Watauga Fire Department was recently given a steel girder section of the World Trade Center so they could establish a permanent memorial to the victims of 9/11 and the first responders. 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters lost their lives on that day. 23 New York City Police Department officers, and 37 Port Authority Police Department officers were also killed. Several Fire Departments across the country have received similar pieces to create their own memorial.

This Girder was brought in earlier this summer on a flat bed trailer and weighs around 5600 pounds. I walked around the trailer when taking pictures of it and to imagine that this one piece of steel weighs that much. It really puts into perspective the gravity of the two towers coming down and the immense forces involved.

Please take time next Sunday to remember those who lives were lost and also those brave service men and women who are out there fighting each day to keep our country safe and free.

FYI, since I took these photos, they have erected the Steel Girder in its final place mounted on a pedestal in between the two flag poles in the front of the Fire Station. It was covered up when I drove by the other day, so I will take pictures and post following the Remembrance ceremony next week.
