After a 2 year drought central Texas has finally received about two months worth of good moisture. As a result the hay cutters in our area were really getting overloaded. To make things tougher the rains have been sporadic and when you cut hay you need a couple of good dry days before you can rake and bail it. If it rains too much on the fresh cut hay Coastal Bermuda Hay ....it can be ruined. Nothing is sweeter than the smell of fresh hay. It is almost intoxicating. The cows love it too!

This weekend is the annual Pioneer Days Celebration and fund raiser for the volunteer fire department and today's turnout seemed pretty substantial for this great little community just outside of Franklin, Texas at the Wheelock community. Ponytails and pistols, gospel and bluegrass, horse rides for the kids, lots of arts and crafts, and plenty of good BBQ were just part of the days festivities to celebrate the old pioneer days of Wheelock, Texas. Some lore and some facts say that Wheelock missed being the capital of Texas by just a couple of votes. Others say that in its heyday it was rather wild with over 20 saloons...of course a saloon could have consisted of a makeshift lemon aid stand type bar with one bottle , 2 glasses and a barkeep. Still today it is a wonderful and history filled little bedroom community. Many folks commute daily to Bryan-College Station and Texas A and M University from Wheelock.

Our local weatherman has not been real accurate lately in predicting rainfall where we live lately. We really need the wet badly too. So we have reverted to a more primitive predictor that resides just outside our kitchen window. She is much prettier than our regular weather person and a heck of a lot more accurate in predicting rainfall. As a matter of fact she is 100% so far this summer predicting two thunderstorms within two weeks! That is good enough for me to now trust her. Her name is Purple Sage! And boy is she pretty!

They say that sage will bloom in advance of a rainstorm and I am now a believer, as I have personally seen her just bloom prolifically right on time a day or two before the only two showers we have had in months. Sage is a low maintenace colorful addition to any garden and does well in low rainfall conditions. Honey bees love it!
