I've started a new series on my Lake Powell Real Estate Blog which I should have written a long time ago.
In 1998, my then 14 year old son David, discovered what turned out to be a great specimen of a plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were water bound marine reptiles that lived at the time of the dinosaurs. Think - Loch Ness Monster - but this one had a very short neck and jaw bones 4 feet long.
Over the next several years David would make more discoveries in the Tropic Shale by Lake Powell behind Big Water, Utah. One of the discoveries would end up being a new species of Plesiosaur called “Eopolycotylus rankini”. A new species of Therizinosaur was found in the same area which David is the co-discoverer "N. graffami" which is named after our neighbor.
Please follow the link to the story. This link is to the first part of what should end up at 8 or 9 parts to tell the story of how to dig a dinosaur, and how this large, pre-historic animals ended up in what is now the high, wind-blown deserts of Southern Utah.

With two large storm fronts moving through the area last week, things were a bit hectic around here. Between the two storms Big Water, Utah received 8.5 inches of snow. Keeping in mind our average rainfall here is around ten inches, this was a big deal. Usually it snows around Lake Powell four or five times a year, but the snow is usually melted by noon. Not this time. At almost a week later, we still have a couple of inches on the ground in the places not in direct sunlight.
Enjoy the photos!
Path to Big Water School nice and snow packed!
Snow on the fruit trees and two large Sage bushes covered.

For the folks that have stopped by my blog here at at Lakepowellrealty and joked around about photos off my back porch... here you go!
Yesterday I walked out of my driveway to the street and shot the following three photos. These are all from the corner of my driveway looking basically north-ish. There was a storm starting to build which arrived today. It has been raining, well sprinkling, all day which is great news! With only 4 to 8 inches of rainfall a year, rain is good.
Looking North West to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument
The View North East toward Lake Powell with Big Water School on the right hand side
Looking almost due North to the Monument and over Wahweap
And There You Have It - Views from a Big Water Utah Porch!
