About Alexandria's Cameron Station

This Church Is Older Than The United States

Karen Kruschka - Prince William, Fairfax ,Stafford County VA Real Estate Service: Real Estate Agent in Woodbridge, VA

Christ Church in Old Town is the oldest Episcopal church in the City of Alexandria VA.

It was designed by famous 18th century architect John Wren in the colonial Georgian style and completed in 1773 by John Carlyle.

George Washington and Robert E. Lee were regular worshipers. Many American presidents attended worship over the years as well as other prominent people. One extremely well known visit was that of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Sir Winston Churchill on the World Day of Prayer for Peace, January 1, 1942 just a few weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

It is both an active congregation and major tourist attraction.

West End Alexandria Farmers Market Sunday, August 8 - and every Sunday thru Oct

Susan Haughton ALEXANDRIA VA REAL ESTATE REALTOR, ABR: Real Estate Agent in Alexandria, VA

Couldn't make the Old Town Alexandria Farmers Market (operating continuously since 1753!) or Del Ray Farmers' Markets today? Don't worry! From May through October, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday, rain or shine, the West End Alexandria Farmers Market will be open for business.

Ben Brenman Park LakeYou have another chance tomorrow at the West End Alexandria Farmers Market, located at Ben Brenman Park, adjacent to Cameron Station. Parking's a breeze, too, which is an advantage over the other two markets.

It appears the market has about doubled in size since last year, so if you haven't been this year, try to make it out and see what's new!Farmers Market

Whether you are looking for every fresh vegetable -- or fruit --imaginable, spiced and candied nuts, fresh baked goods, organic meats, milks and cheeses, there is something yummy sure to please at this market.

There's fair-trade coffee, homemade pastas and sauces (sold by a hunky firefighter) plus a variety of artisans, a couple with homemade soaps...plus much, much more.

These folks say it better than I can, plus they have a handy map, recipes and a lot of interesting info on some of the vendors, so check out Culinate's blurb on the West End Farmers Market. And try to make it out there tomorrow - it's going to be another beautiful day here in Alexandria, VA.

UPDATE: West End Farmers' Market Closed at Ben Brenman Park WILL BE CLOSED SUNDAY, AUGUST 22 in preparation for the Annual Cambodian Community Day Festival. The West End Farmers' Market will reopen Sunday, August 29 and continue Sundays through November 21.

*By the way, the city of Alexandria is committed to accessibility for all, so if you would like to request a reasonable accommodation or to request materials in an alternative format, just give Jack Browand with the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities a call at 703.838.5095, extension 273 (TTY 703.838.4902) or e-mail jack.browand@alexandriava.gov.

Welcome Home to Cameron Station

Susan Haughton ALEXANDRIA VA REAL ESTATE REALTOR, ABR: Real Estate Agent in Alexandria, VA

Quite often, I will get a call or an email asking for information on homes for sale in Cameron Station - and usually, the inquiry is from someone who lives not only outside the DC Metro area, but out of state. Good news travels far and wide, apparently, about this very popular planned community in Alexandria, VA.

What makes Cameron Station so popular?

I'm not sure if it's the serene surroundings..with Ben Brenman Park bordering the east end of the community, with its lake, soccer field, tennis courts, fenced dog park, bike trails and seasonal Farmers Market...

...or, right in the heart of the neighborhood, Main Street Retailers, such as Food Matters gourmet market and cafe; Bright Start Learning Center and Pre-School; Cameron Cafe upscale coffee shop...there's even a dry cleaner, family dentist and convenience market.

Just outside the neighborhood are grocery stores, a terrific public library, a 24 hour drug store as well as a wide variety of other retailers.

Maybe it's the transportation options, including a neighborhood Metro shuttle plus a super convenient location near the Van Dorn Metro station as well as stops for DASH and Metro Bus. Or, if your commute requires you to drive, you're right down the street from 395 and 495, which will get you wherever you need to go in the metro DC area. Cameron Station is convenient to Old Town Alexandria and Reagan National Airport, too.

...Or perhaps it's Samuel W. Jackson Elementary School, located in the west end of the neighborhood, adjacent to Armistead L. Boothe Park, with lighted athletic fields and playgrounds, picnic tables, tennis and basketball courts.

The neighborhood amenities probably have something to do with the popularity of the neighborhood...the outdoor pool and the state of the art Cameron Club Fitness Facility, which offers a wide selection of exercise equipment, as well as a variety of group classes. Or, if you prefer, private trainers are also available.

Or maybe Cameron Station is popular simply because of its beautiful selection of homes...from upscale condos to stylish townhomes to elegant detached single family homes, designed to emulate the architectural styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, with its pocket parks, colonial street lamps and brick sidewalks, Cameron Station is a cozy community with a small town feel...where historic meets contemporary.

Busy as a Beaver: I've Met the Culprits in Cameron Station

Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate: Real Estate Agent in McLean, VA

If you've ever spent a Spring day walking around Ben Brenman Park, the large park adjacent to the Cameron Station neighborhood in Alexandria, you've definitely delighted in the beautiful cherry trees around the lake.

Cherry Blossoms

Well, according to the Alexandria Gazette Packet, those cherry trees are going to be a little less colorful this year.

Seems that "a pack of beavers has been munching on the trunks of Yoshino trees there." The paper reports that "[c]ity arborists have removed about 40 Yoshino cherry trees in the last two months in the wake of the all-you-can-eat beaver buffet."

It was a coincidence that I happened to read this article yesterday, since I've met the culprits. Yes, I saw some members of the pack last month while walking around the lake.

Say hello to the culprits:

While these beavers are busy gnawing at cherry trees and building their dams, I'm busy selling real estate in Northern Virginia. My first sale of the year closed yesterday and I've got another one closing next week.

2010 is the year of the busy beavers in Northern Virginia real estate.
