One of the joys - and pains - of living in an area such as Alexandria VA is your life is altered every summer, holiday and school break by hoardes of tourists who head into town to enjoy the many sights, sounds and activities of this wonderful area.
Since my office is located on King Street, which is the heart of OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA VA, just finding a parking space in the garage is a challenge, because our parking is shared with HOTEL MONACO, which plays host to many of these tourists. Fortunately, they have valet parking, which I have taken advantage of more than once when in a hurry.
While getting down the street can be a challenge sometimes, I have to admit I like the tourists! I like their excitement about visiting the area and I like to hear their perspective on this wonderful place where we are privileged to live.
Because of the location of our office, it's fun to watch our visitors stopping and looking at the flyers in our windows...those who are from less expensive areas find amusement in our prices. Those, however, from more expensive areas, are amazed at how much one can get for their mortgage dollar in OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA.
So, what do those mortgage dollars buy in OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA VA? Well, $179,900 buys you an updated 500 s.f. efficiency on the north end of OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA.
Need more space? How about the 6,718 s.f. John Janney House, built in 1760? That will take a few more of your mortgage dollars - 5,700,000 of them, in fact. That's the most expensive property listed for sale in OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA right now.
The average list price, though, for OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA properties is $787,086, while the average under contract price is $708,647. Considering the average sold price in the past 30 days was $650,873, I'd say things are looking up for the OLD TOWN ALEXANDRIA real estate market.

The 4th Annual Ofrenda or Day of the Dead Festival at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria will take place this Saturday, October 30.
Day of the Dead is a centuries old holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican Americans, It focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember those who have died.
Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed.
The official celebration occurs on November 2 in conjunction with All Souls Day.
The Day of the Dead at the Torpedo Factory includes an afternoon exhibit of ofrendas or altars by 36 local artists; sugar skull making; a parade from Market Square at 7:00pm; and full blown masquerade ball in the evening.
We're out of town this year but I'm putting this on my calendar for 2011!
