About Hampton City County, VA

This image is of the Pocahontas window given in 1887, in part, by Native American students from Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, now Hampton University, who participated in the life of the parish of St. john's.

St. John's Church is the oldest English-speaking parish in America, founded in 1610. The church of St. John's is a 1728 worship building displaying beautiful colonial brickwork. There have been three parish sites before this current site dating to 1728.

Named after the neighborhood in the movie

classic, "It's A Wonderful Life", life here today is

best described as simple, clean and safe. Today a neighborhood of 71 single-family

homes (Bailey Park) now surrounds an attractive

housing development for seniors (Sinclair

Commons). The neighborhood appears as if it

was taken out of a storybook. The streets are

tree-lined with lamppost lighting and each home

Fox Hill seems an odd name for a community

where there are no foxes or hills but at the time

the community was named, there were both

foxes and hills in the form of dunes at the beach.

The fascinating tour will allow you to discover

both Hampton's natural beauty and visit one of

our strongest, and oldest, neighborhoods. The

Fox Hill community has a rich history and was

once home to some of the earliest European

settlers to the United States. Fox Hill is also the

home of one of the last unspoiled beaches on

the east coast, the Grandview Nature

Preserve, 475 acres of salt marsh, tidal

creeks, and Chesapeake Bay beachfront.

Today, the neighborhood has

grown into a nurturing community

where family life flourishes and there is a

deep respect for nature. A drive down Beach

Road, the main street through Fox Hill, is

reminiscent of a bygone era where residents still

wave from behind their white picket fences.

Come visit, and if the road side farm stand is

open, pick up a tomato, just remember to put

money in the jar !

The Sussex at Hampton neighborhood has been

named as the next Hampton Housing Venture

Neighborhood. The neighborhood consists of 192 all

brick New England style colonial style homes. The

Sussex neighborhood planning team has been meeting

to develop a strategic plan for the revitalization

of their neighborhood. The Sussex Neighborhood

Revitalization Plan was recently approved by the

Neighborhood Commission, Planning Commission and

the Hampton City Council. The plan includes strategies

for:

• Beautification and Public Improvements

• Housing Revitalization & Curb Appeal

• Neighborhood Marketing

• Community Capacity Building

Watch for continuing developments from the Sussex

neighborhood as they realize their vision for the neighborhood

The Hampton Housing Venture neighborhood of

Pasture Point was recently approved as a state

historic district by the Virginia Department of Historic

Resources. The approval makes state historic tax

credits available to property owners interested in

making improvements to their homes. For more information
