Brightwood is an unincorporated city in Madison County. Route 29 is the major highway leading northeast to Culpeper and Northern Virginia, and southwest to Charlottesville.
There are some restaurants, lodging facilities, and industrial and farm businesses along Route 29, and single-family housing is common in neighborhoods north and south of it, but most of Brightwood, and indeed Madison, remains undeveloped.
Local wine vinyards, such as Prince Michael, offer tourists some activities.
Brightwood is bounded more or less on the north by Route 640, the east by Shady Lane, the south by Route 630, and the west by the Robinson River.

Madison County, Virginia
I would be interested to hear from agents who live or work in Madison, VA. Madison is the area just beyond Culpeper, which is already thought to be "far out" by us city folk in the DC/Metro area. Madison (and Culpeper) by the way are quite beautiful. Vast, green expanses still untouched by development offer a nice escape for those in search of hiking, horse racing and polo, fishing, or my favorite recent past time: touring vinyards.
Yes, I used to be more of snob when it came to wine, preferring California, but Virginia seems to have gotten its act together and has been brewing up some really good stuff!
A long hour, plus maybe a half, plus whatever traffic the I-66 construction crews decided to generate and you have arrived at place where property values are still affordable. Nice homes here go for what they probably ought to go for; whereas in ugly Annandale you pay triple just for the convenience of being 15 minutes from anything in any direction (by the way, I love Annandale, but it looks nothing like Madison).
So, my question is, what is going to happen when more and more people find out about it? Are folks moving there now? What about the Charlottesville people--are they headed there too from the other side? How much longer do I get to enjoy it as it is?
There, I said "question," but that's a few...

Whoa, it was close! As the days of March ticked off it looked like we would not record any sales for the month in Madison County. I checked the local mls again today and the update was a relief for all home owners in the county. At the last minute a foreclosure made it through settlement on the 30th with a closing price of $140,600. A traditional resale closed on the 31st with a sold price of $107,000. In Madison, clearing out the inventory is always a good thing for those with a home to sell now or in the near future.
If you have a question about buying or selling a home visit CulpeperHomeSales for tips, stats, and more!

As an avid hiker and explorer of Shenandoah National Park-Skyline Drive, I recently availed myself of a hike in Whiteoak Canyon to the lower Whiteoak Falls. During a family get-together at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised to find several nearby trails leading into the park. This year my Family and I hiked the 4 ½ mile Lower Falls part of the Whiteoak Canyon, from the Park Boundary in Madison County off Weakley Hollow Rd. to the lower falls and back. It was a somewhat strenuous and steep hike, but well worth it for the fall colors in their splendor. The spectacular view of the falls was made even more beautiful as the sun dipped behind the ridgeline of the Canyon. Skyline Drive is particularly congested in the fall as many people enjoy viewing the beautiful fall colors along this stretch of the Blue Ridge. Myself I prefer to find more off the beaten path parts of the park. Below are several images from this hike, I hope you all enjoy and take the time to explore this most beautiful National Park for yourself.
