Another lovely Smith Mountain Lake springtime is just on the horizon. We can’t wait to see the tulips bloom, the dogwoods blossom and the golf course prepped and ready for a new season. At Smith Mountain Lake golf isn’t just a pastime, it’s a lifestyle. With three public golf courses at SML and two private golf courses in waterfront neighborhoods, this is certainly a golf loving community. Most lake residents are either active golfers or at least occasionally test the greens with friends or family. In this community, golf is a staple, providing entertainment, exercise and even job opportunities that support the local economy.
This March when spring brings fresh fragrances and warm sunshine, the golf course is the place to be. So dust off the clubs, practice your putting and warm up that golf swing because spring, summer and even fall at Smith Mountain Lake is a golfer’s dream.
If you’re ready to set a tee time at one of Smith Mountain Lake’s scenic and challenging public golf courses, here are the contact numbers for three located right at SML:
Mariners Landing Resort and Conference Center - 540-297-7888
The Westlake Golf & Country Club - 540-721-4214
Sycamore Ridge Golf Club - 540-297-6490

If you’ve only recently become aware of amazing Smith Mountain Lake, just knowing of its substantial size, gorgeous landscape, recreational attraction, and impressive real estate growth probably makes you curious about its history. How did such a place develop? How old is the lake? Where can you go to learn more about its establishment?
To go back to the beginning, you have to become familiar with the Smith Mountain Dam, built by local power company Appalachian Power Company (now American Electric Power). The power company built the concrete dam in the Roanoke River between 1960 and 1963 in order to establish a source of hydroelectricity. The project was fully completed in 1966, creating Smith Mountain Lake.
When visiting Smith Mountain Lake, we encourage you to check out the Smith Mountain Dam located in Pittsylvania County. At the dam is a visitor’s center where you can learn all about the dam’s history, construction and function.
