Lago Mar Virginia Beach

A community is as good as those that contribute to it - the more the merrier!

Lago Mar has long been known for it’s beauty and quality of life that have all been developed by neighbors just like you.

Many of the events residents have enjoyed year after year began with a single resident and an idea, followed up by their energy and dedication, and eventually became so popular that the civic league has worked to help keep traditions going such as Santa visits and July 4th parades.

In addition, a great deal goes on behind the scenes and is again supported and made possible by volunteers — capital improvements, communications with the city and surrounding businesses and communities, trail improvements, landscape maintenance….the list goes on and of course, grows with the ideas and energy of our current resident volunteers.

Those who take part in these activities, young & old, know first-hand the value they personally get by contributing to their community and this neighborhood. There always seems to be more ideas and needs than volunteers but with over 900 homes, the right people with the right talents and ideas are undoubtedly out there. Every household has something to offer and we want to include you.

Click Here for a list of volunteer opportunities and know that the list is not all inclusive. What new ideas might you want to take a shot at? A 5K race? Aid to those in need right here in the neighborhood? Improve on something that’s already in place? Serve on the civic league board? Interview a resident and share the stories & history gained from those who’ve been around? Submit an article to the Ledger?

Croatan Homes BEAUTIFUL CROATAN HOMES

In the beginning...the shore of present-day Croatan was roamed by Indians. When Sir Walter Raleigh sponsored the first English settlement in the New World in 1584, the settlers who landed on Roanoke Island named their new home Fort Raleigh. The first English baby born in America was named Virginia Dare. The ships sailed to England for supplies and, in 1590, upon their return, they found Fort Raleigh empty with only one clue...on a tree was carved the word "Croatan", the name of a tribe on Hatteras Island. The "Lost Colony" was never found. Just recently, in archaeological digs on Hatteras, several English artifacts have been discovered, including a button from the time of Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Walter Raleigh, plus some eating utensils and a belt buckle.

The records in the Old Princess Anne Courthouse, however, go back to 1774 when the land was owned by a few men. Later a company in Missouri bought the land. By 1898, a religious group bought 196 acres for $13,500. And created "Chautauqua-By-The-Sea." The plans were grandiose. They called for a convention center, a large hotel, and a center for training ministers of the gospel. Nothing came of the plan. more owners came and went until 1946 when a Richmond-based corporation called Seaside Homes, Inc. bought 2 large tracts of the property and announced another grandiose plan. Seaside proposed to build 13 hotels, 23 apartment buildings, and an extensive residential area. It paid $93,500 for the property. The next year, the corporation moved its base to Virginia Beach and changed its charter to read Croatan Corporation. Disagreements and complications led the company into bankruptcy. In July, 1949, an auction was held at the Virginia Beach Community Center. The amount of the sale is uncertain, as a scandal broke out with a conviction of an attorney who embezzled some $135,000. One of the largest purchasers at that time was George T. McLean. Croatan was slow to grow for a period of time. However, in the past few years, Croatan has become a "prime" location for families.

Shadowlawn Safety Committe - Crime Update

August 2011 Crime Statistics

  • There were 22 crimes in July, a new record high for the year. Our previous high was 20 set just last month in July, and our record low was June, with only 8. The average is 18 per month.
  • There was one robbery on the 500 block of Winston Salem and 3 Assaults in the 1000 block of Norfolk Ave. There were one larceny each for building, yard, marina & boat. There were no vehicle larcenies but we had our first vehicle theft on the 400 block of Carolina.
  • As for lesser crimes, there were 6 hit and run and 5 destruction of private property.
  • The blocks closest to Norfolk Ave. continue to bear the brunt of the crimes.
  • 9 crimes occurred in the first 2 weeks of the month, and 13 crimes occurred in the last 2 weeks of the month, a pace of almost one a day, the same as last month.

2nd Precinct Police Advisory Committee (PAC) Meeting on Wednesday, August 10, 2011

  • Event Driven Activity – We had the hurricane, Rock & Roll and Shriners during the past 3 weekends. The police were fully staffed for all the events with the hurricane & Rock & Roll going very smoothly. Although 150 Hell’s Angel’s were in town for the Shriners weekend, the police had more issues with the shriners.
  • 2nd Precinct Open House – The 2nd Precinct will hold an open house on Saturday, October 22nd from 11AM to 3PM (this is a change from 10/08). Participants will include all the city departments; Police, Fire, EMS, Library and several others. It is their goal to achieve a greater connection with the neighborhoods they serve. Captain Gallagher says the police will have all “the police toys” there…so bring the kids!
  • “No Victims” – Last month a vehicle theft “crew” was captured and confessed to over 100 vehicle break-in’s. Very few of the break-ins had been reported so the charges against them could be dismissed! Please advise our members to REPORT ALL CRIMES NO MATTER HOW SMALL.
  • “Dangerous Dogs” – The state has a registry for dangerous dogs, but thankfully none are reported in our zip code. The website is: http://www.virginia.gov/vdacs_dd/public/cgi-bin/public.cgi
