New Lights and Trees Coming to Crystal City...

Crystal City isn't the same boring, concrete slab it was a decade ago.

In case you haven't noticed, a lot is happening in the Crystal City neighborhood. There are outdoor zumba classes, wine Fridays, 5Ks, a farmer's market, and a ton of new restaurants and shops.

On Monday, the Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) broke ground on its Southern Entryway project, near the intersection of Route 1 and 33rd Street.

The parcel of land, owned by Gould Property Company, is located at the southern point of Crystal City's confines. Nearly 50,000 commuters make their way to Crystal City and points north through this land each and every day.

Those coming to Crystal City from the south will soon be greeted by 28 gorgeous trees and beautiful LED lights, where currently there is just a slab of grass. The trees and lights will be woven into a geometric pattern with grass and plenty of space for lounging.

This Crystal City improvement project will take six to eight weeks to complete and is slated to be completed by Thanksgiving 2011.

In 1300 Crystal drive, you can find one of the original communities in Crystal City, an urban village found in the southeast area of Arlington County, Virginia (found south of Washington DC). This condominium community is the Crystal Gateway.

With 17 floors and a two-story penthouse, this cast-concrete condo, made in the mid-sixties, is adjoined to Waterford House, their curvilinear shapes forming an arc over a landscaped courtyard and pool.

Every floor of the Crystal Gateway contains 3-4 condo units that will contain either one of the following specifications: 1,516 square foot area with two bedrooms and two bath units or a 2,296 square foot area with three bedrooms, two and one half bath units. The penthouse, on the other hand, totals 2,780 square feet and has four bedrooms and three baths.

Units have spacious floor plans. Floors may be made of hardwood, ceramic tile or have wall-to-wall carpeting. Living rooms have wet bars. Units also have enough closet space. Kitchens have up-to-date appliances, Corian countertops and breakfast nooks. There are also washer-dryers and marble bathrooms that contain two basins and a soaking tub. There are also balconies that can be accessed through both living rooms and master bedrooms, allowing residents to enjoy magnificent views of the Potomac River, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Kennedy Center and the distant National Cathedral.

The Crystal Gateway also offers accessibility to their tenants, because Crystal City is reachable through both blue and yellow lines of the Metro, the Metrobus, the Arlington Transit ART buses, and the Omnilink computer buses. Virginia Railway Express trains also make a stop at the Metro.

It takes only 10 minutes to walk to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Pentagon Row and 15 minutes to reach the Pentagon and Pentagon City Mall.

The Crystal Gateway also provides amenities such as a card room and other function rooms. You can reach these rooms by first going through the mirrored, tastefully colored lobby. Exercise facilities, weight rooms, an aerobics area and an indoor pool also caters to the fitness and health of tenants.

For a monthly condo association fee of around $650 to $850, residents can enjoy concierge and security services 24/7. Other services, like water and hot water, building maintenance, and grounds keeping, are also made available. Each unit is also entitled to one basement parking space and a cage storage area. Additional storage can be availed at a cost.

Crystal Gateway was further improved in 2007 when its foyer and halls went through redecoration and the heating and air-conditioning systems went through an upgrade. The past five years have marked several other transformations - particularly in the cooling tower, heat exchanger and two hot-water heaters. All balconies have also been resurfaced.

Eco-friendly and energy-conservation measures are also being implemented, including trash recycling. Further improvements have also been made, such as new audio for the fire-alarm system and an improvement in elevator interior design.

Amenities at Crystal Gateway include a card room and a larger party room off the mirrored, mauve-and-green lobby. There's an exercise facility with a weight room and an aerobics area, as well as an indoor pool.

In 2007, Crystal Gateway's foyer and halls were redecorated and the electric heating and air- conditioning system was upgraded. The last five years have seen major building replacements, among them the cooling tower, the heat exchanger and two hot-water heaters. In addition, all the balconies have been resurfaced.

The building is the midst of "going green," implementing energy-conservation measures and trash recycling, and improvements scheduled for 2008 include new audio for the fire-alarm system and interior decoration of both elevators.
