Holmes Run Acres-Mid-Century Modern under a Leafy Canopy

Cindy Jones-Northern Virginia Real Estate & Military Relocation Services: Real Estate Agent in Woodbridge, VA

Many who are not familiar with mid-century architecture lump any neighborhood in Northern Virginia with "contemporary style" homes in the same category.  Fans of mid-century modern housing understand there is a big difference between the two.  The confusion reminds me of a brain teaser from science class which I reworked to say "all mid-century modern homes are contemporary but not all contemporary homes are mid-century modern."

The two most recognizable mid-century modern neighborhoods in Fairfax County, Hollin Hills and Holmes Run Acres are great examples of the vision of the developers who understood the principals of making homes fit in with the environment and not bulldoze every tree in site.  You will find other pockets of mid-century homes in Reston, Lake Barcroft and Mantua Hills to name a few but complete neighborhoods are rare.

Holmes Run Acres located just off of Interstate 495, minutes to the entrance of INOVA Fairfax Hospital and Exxon Headquarters seems worlds away from all of the colonials that you find in most established neighborhoods nearby.  The development of the property began in 1950 and the end it took three different builders to complete the 355 homes.

Each of the builders the Luria Brother, Gaddy Brothers and Andre Boder added new models to the neighborhood yet when you go inside the smallest Luria to the largest Boder you will see a continuity of design.  Expansive windows, wood cathedral ceilings, brick wall fireplaces and open floor plans are common in all of the models.

Even though the neighborhood was built without sidewalks with large lots filled with old trees, wide streets and long driveways you don't have any worries walking along the neighborhood roads.  Holmes Run Acres was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 and the loyal mid-century modern fans will tell you that Holmes Run Acres is another great example of the rare modernist movement in our area.
