Iwo Jima Memorial

Iwo Jima MemorialThe Marine Corps War Memorial honors fallen U.S. Marine Corps members depicting one of the most famous incidents of World War II. The incident was witnessed by news photographer Joe Rosenthal whose picture of six men raising the American flag on Mt. Suribachi won the Pulitzer Prize and later became the symbol of the war effort in the Pacific. The depiction was also used by the American government to sell war bonds and to promote the war effort. Finally, the picture inspired sculptor Felix DeWeldon, who created a life size model of the photograph, where it was later cast into bronze and brought to Washington, D.C, in September 1954.

The names and dates of every principal Marine Corps engagement since the founding of the Corps is burnished into the base of the statue, as well as the inscription: "In honor and in memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps who have given their lives to their country since November 10, 1775."

The Memorial is located on Marshall Drive, between Rt. 50 and the Arlington National Cemetery in Rosslyn. The U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial is administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Telephone 703-289-2500 for further information about scheduled events.

Air Force Memorial

The Air Force Memorial is sited on a promontory overlooking Washington D.C., Arlington VA and between them, the Potomac River. The Memorial's spires measure 270 feet. These spires tower above the Pentagon, Rosslyn and Crystal City. The Memorial was formally dedicated on October 14, 2006. The Memorial remains dedicated to the United States Air Force service members and the Heritage Organizations of the USAF.

The design of the Memorial intends to evoke a modern image of flight by jet and space vehicles, but yet remembers the pioneers of flight who came before. The three spires of the Monument represent the three core values of the US Air Force: Integrity first, Service before self, and Excellence in all we do. It is interesting to note that the spires are different heights and asymmetrical giving the Memorial a dynamic quality that offers different views from every angle. Although the Air Force Memorial is visible all over town, one of the best views is from Arlington Ridge. At the end of Arlington Ridge Road, the Representative overlooks much of the same vistas as the Memorial.

Historic Homes on Fort Myer
When you drive through the gates of Fort Myer and see the historic brick buildings and Victorian style mansions on Generals Row you realize that this post may be a bit different than any others where you may have visited before.  From the civil war when the post, then called Fort Whipple defended Washington DC from the Confederate Army to today the traditions of the Army stand strong.

Fot Myer Casisson & StablesFort Myer is home to the US Army School of Music and The Old Guard the Army's premier ceremonial unit. Driving through Fort Myer you will find stables for the horses and the caisson used for both military and Presidential funerals. The most famous horse remembered from the Old Guard in Black Jack the riderless horse seen in the funerals of presidents John F. Kennedy, Herbert Hoover and Lyndon Johnson.

How the land that makes up the Army post as well as surrounding Arlington Cemetery came into the possession of the US Government is an interesting piece of US history.  Originally owned by Mary Ann Randolph who married Robert E. Lee, the land was confiscated by the government when the Lee's were unable to pay the property taxes.  When the government took the land they created Arlington Cemetery and Fort Myer.  The Custis-Lee Mansion still stands on the Arlington Cemetery portion of the land.

If the information that the land that comprises the Fort Myer came to the US by tax confiscation isn't enough history it is also the site of the first military aircraft flight by Orville Wright and the site of the first military aircraft fatality. On the second flight attempt Orville Wright was injured and Lt. Selfridge was killed. So much for the fame of Kitty Hawk!

Air Force Memorial from Fort Myer
Fort Myer offers breathtaking views of the Air Force Memorial, Washington Monument and Arlington Cemetery at various locations throughout the post.  If you find yourself with orders to Fort Myer then be ready for a treat.  It may be small but the history and tradition connected with the post are some of the oldest in the US.

Janice Bittner is taking a New Approach to Generate Public Awareness on the Importance of Dryer Vent Cleaning in Fort Myer, VA

Janice Bittner: Environmental Services in Fairfax, VA

Janice is committed to preventing clothes dryer fires in her community, but some people still haven't got the message

Arlington, VA - Janice Bittner is the owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, a dryer vent cleaning, repair and installation company that goes over and above by providing not only top-notch service, but also valuable fire safety tips for consumers. Sadly, many are still not getting the message, so Janice is trying another approach. In a recent interview, Janice said, "It's sad that so many dryer fires are occurring each year with all the information our company has made available for people about dryer vent maintenance. A clogged dryer vent causes reduced air flow, overheating and eventually, a fire. If saving lives and homes doesn't motivate people, maybe reducing energy costs will. A clean dryer vent system allows a clothes dryer to run more efficiently and save a significant amount of money on utility bills."

During the interview, someone brought up the point that while the dryer is running more efficiently with a clean dryer vent system, the hole in the wall where the duct goes outside is letting in cold air. Janice provided the solution to this problem as she explained, "There is a product on the market called a dryer vent draft blocker that works like a damper; it has a flap that opens when the dryer is running and closes when the dryer is not running. This product makes a big difference in keeping the cold air out, but you must keep it clean and make sure it is always working properly. Do not allow lint to build up in the vent and be sure it is not frozen shut or obstructed."

In addition to the dryer vent draft blocker, Janice also suggested using a product called Great Stuff. "Great Stuff is canned foam that can be sprayed around the dryer duct if there are gaps allowing cool air into your home. Be careful when using this product; it only takes a small amount to fill gaps because it expands when you spray it. If you should get too much in one area, it is best to wait until it dries, and then remove the excess with a utility knife. You can also sand it and paint if you're concerned with how it looks."

Janice Bittner is the owner of Dryer Vent Wizard, a company who specializes in Dryer Vent Cleaning, repairs and maintenance, while educating their customers on dryer fire prevention and energy conservation. Janice is committed to reducing the amount of devastating fires that are caused each year by poorly maintained dryer vent systems.
