Geroge Mason IV, a highly respected Virginia patriot, was also a member of Pohick Church. Although not as nationally famous as his fellow vestryman and friend, George Washington, George Mason IV (1725-1792) authored the Virginia Declaration of Rights. It was eventually incorporated into the Virginia Constitution. For example, Article 1 read "That all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety."

Why is this of interest? Many of the guarantees of the document were incorporated into the Declaration of Independence and the US Bill of Rights. Thomas Jefferson referred to him as "a man of the first order of wisdom".

This historic church is as lovely today as it was in the eighteenth century. It is in Lorton just south of Fort Belvoir on US Route 1 which is pretty much the same route the Washingtons would have traveled from Mount Vernon for worship services

The church is still home to an active Episcopal congregation as it was when Washington, Mason and Fairfax attended. The church and grounds are impeccably maintained. As was typical of the day there is an attached cemetery with many very old grave markers.

Tuesday, September 7, 2010 marks the opening of the new school year here in Fairfax County. While many of the school commuters are seasoned veterans there is a group of "newbies" every year. However, they all deserve your respect and consideration. The school zone speed limit lights have been on this week to remind us of the upcoming beginning of the school year.
  • The law requires you to stop behind a school bus when their red lights flash.
  • School crossing guards will be out in full force every morning and afternoon at critical intersections. They are there for one reason only - it is to protect our youngest citizens as they walk to and from school. Obey their commands.
  • Be advised Prince William County police officers do monitor traffic regularly at school zones on a rotating basis.
