LOUDOUN COUNTY VA YARD MAINTENANCE. Turning a chore into a landscaping adventure.
EVEN THE YARD TRIMMINGS CAN OFFER A BIT OF LANDSCAPING STYLE AND BEAUTY.
Last week was my landscaping chores included trimming back the shrubs and ornamental grasses in preparation for (eeekk, I don't even want to whisper the word, winter). However, I know it had to be done and we got to it.
TURNING YARD TRIMMINGS INTO LANDSCAPING ACCENTS. I love ornamental grasses. They are quite beautiful and decorative with a certain dominating feature, height. They do, however, have to be cut back in the fall so they grow back healthy and strong in the late spring. So, we got to it. Chop, chop.
Tall Grasses Before Cutting Back.
WAIT! Don't throw those beautiful grasses away. Let's use them.

Tall Grass Cuttings Decorate the Landscaping.
It was simple to accomplish. We just took the grass trimmings, bundled them and tied them to the fence posts. Yes, the "fence" is decorative too.
Use your imagination and create an oasis in your landscaping. This area is a bulb garden which in the Spring will be full of beautiful Tulips and Daffodils. In the meantime, we still have a lovely scene.

DRIVING AROUND NORTHERN VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND COUNTRY ROADS, as I often do, one of the nicest things to view is the wildflowers.
THE TIGER LILYalways announces the arrival of SUMMER. This year, I spotted the first Tiger Lilies in Lovettsville on the 21st of June.
SUMMER TIME IS HERE!
These Tiger Lilies blossomed in the moat in front of my home on the 21st of June.

WHO PUT THAT BIG ROCK IN MY BACK YARD? NO, IT'S SUPER TURTLE!!
Glancing out my back window on Friday made me look twice. You know the feeling. You see something and then look away. However, the brain won't compute. So, you have to look again, and again. That's exactly what happened. Time to grab the camera.
I couldn't believe my eyes.
To get perspective on the size of this turtle, look at it next to the septic access in my back yard which is about 32 inches wide.
What kind of turtle is it? It's a Snapping Turtle, of course. How do I know that? As far as I'm concerned, there are only two kinds of turtles, Snapping Turtles and those that went into the soup. Snapping Turtles are often found in areas around water and there is a creek that goes through the moat in front of my home as well as a creek that runs down the hill on the left side of the lot, which is where it probably came from. It was a BIG turtle. Since I've spent a lot of time on lakes in the area, I see them often, but never one this big.

I DON'T HAVE TO TRAVEL TO SEE WILDLIFE IN LOUDOUN COUNTY VIRGINIA. I need only to look out the window of my home office, which faces the road in front of my home. Lovettsville is a rural village in Western Loudoun County, population about 1,000 folks and many more wildlife residents.
While at my computer, I notice almost any movement in front of my home. I've observed many interesting sightings and wildlife is always enjoyable. So far I've sighted many wildlife neighbors including White Tail Deer, Squirrel, Red Fox, Groundhog, Wild Turkey, Skunk, Opossum and many birds. It could be said that one of the reasons I moved to the country was for the neighbors.
MEET MY NEIGHBOR, THE WILD TURKEY.
This lovely bird was meandering up the road in front of my home when I spotted the movement. By the time I got my camera from my bag, a vehicle was coming up the road and the turkey was headed for the wooded area where they live.
These majestic birds enjoy a diet of acorns, nuts, leaves, buds (plentiful now), seeds and fruit and may enjoy an occasional insect, snail and spider.
WELCOME NEIGHBOR. DROP BY ANYTIME.
