Built in 1904 the Manassas Railroad Depot has been serving commuters to Washington, DC ever since. The three black and white photos in the collage are representative of many others currently hanging in the waiting rooms. The fourth is a photo I took of the old telegrapher's office that has been restored
A fire in 1912 destroyed the entire building which was rebuilt on the original foundation in 1914.
The station was restored to its' original condition in 1997. Although I have not inquired I suspect the two waiting rooms were there as a result of segregation in Southern states. One of them is now the offices of Historic Manassas - the marketing arm of the Old Town Manassas district which is a major tourist and commercial area.
When compared to the black and white photos hanging in the railroad station the first photo below attests to the great care that was taken in the restoration.
The authenticity of the restoration even extends to the antique mailbox outside which is still in service.
Although freight trains rumble through and Amtrak trains either stop or pass through the station's primary user is the Virginia Railway Express commuter service.
Railroading has always played an important role in the life of Manassas - it was the reason for two deadly Manassas Civil War Battkes. It still does today in both the eastern and western sections of Prince William County.
The depot is very popular with tourists, most especially railroad buffs

Those words were spoken in 1905 by Thomas J. Moore, a newly elected Trustee of Buckhall United Methodist Church in Manassas.
Prior to that Buckhall was served once a month by a Methodist circuit rider pastor. In June 1905 Joseph and Lydia Hensley donated land for the construction of a church.
It was completed in 1906 at a total cost of $830.80.
Buckhall United Methodist has continued to grow and serve the community. While the original sanctuary still stands proudly at the corner of the Prince William Parkway and Moore Drive it is now attached to a Sunday School and much larger sanctuary.
