About Smithfield's Gatling Pointe

Never Know What You'll Find in Your Backyard

Pottery Anyone? I'm not a big pottery guy, but I found these broken pottery pieces in our backyard in Smithfield, Virginia. They were found down the bank of our lot in the edge of a wooded area in a hole we had dug randomly. (A photo of where they were found is below)

Smithfield was established in 1750 and incorporated as a Colonial seaport town. Our county, Isle of Wight was settled by English settlers in the early 1600's. Our neighborhood, Gatling Pointe, is located where the Pagan and James Rivers meet. Indians inhabited our property during the period of time when the Jamestown settlers traded with the Indians on the southern shore of the James River, and what is now Isle of Wight County.

The pottery triangular piece is totally different and has a polished finish with some kind of Indian caricatures painted on it. The other pieces appear to come from the same bowl.

Our lot is on the marsh and we're on a waterfront cul-de-sac, which borders Moone Creek (named after Captain John Moone). I'd say the hole is at about the 10' above sea level mark and our home built is at the 19' above sea level mark. Our company, East West Partners of Virginia developed the company in 1988, and the property was a farm owned by the Edwin Gatling family.

Records indicate that there was a brick factory on the property, called the "Newport News Brickworks" which made bricks for the early Colonial homes. A sawmill was also on the property over 150 years ago. The land was also once owned by Mallory Todd, a Colonial sea merchant, who built a home in downtown Smithfield in 1753. Find out more about the history of the Gatling Pointe property.

Our home was built in 1996 and it's located on the marsh, near Moone Creek that surrounds the western past of Gatling Pointe.

The aerial photo above is of the Gatling Pointe Yacht Club marina and clubhouse. It is located at the mouth of the Pagan River and is bordered by Moone Creek.
