About Springfield's Cardinal Forest

Cardinal Forest today retains some of the same feel that it did in the 1970's when the neighborhood was first converting to condominiums from rental units. Still welcoming newlyweds, military families and retirees the community has matured and maintained its charm. The Springfield metro is 15 minutes away and if Fort Belvoir is your destination you can be at Tulley Gate within 30 minutes. Cardinal Forest also shares the back gate entrance to Lake Accotink Park, one of Fairfax Counties lake front parks along with the Charlestown neighborhood.

Commuting to the Pentagon is as simple as stepping outside your door and walking to 2-3 blocks to Forrester Blvd or Carrleigh Parkway Both neighborhoods offer Springfield commuters multiple options. If you aren't picked up by a commuter looking for slugs then you can grab the 18G Metro Bus. If you take the 7:18 bus you will be at the Pentagon at 7:50. How great is that? If Fort Belvoir or NGA is your destination then the commute is also 30 minutes or less depending on stoplights!

Both neighborhoods are located in the West Springfield HS Pyramid and the elementary school and HS are within walking distance. Want to shop? If you want you can walk to the Giant or Whole Foods Grocery Stores and while you are at the shopping center you can stop by Starbucks, Austin Grill or Chicken Out for bite to eat.

Whenever a disaster occurs anywhere in the United States the American Red Cross is one of the many public, religious or private relief organizations that responds with whatever emegency service is appropriate for the situation. Additionally, the number of indviduals who volunteer to assist is always impressive.

We Americans have a history of helping a neighbor in need. I am no authority, but I suspect it started when the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth under harsh conditions and later as the population started the westward trek. We've all heard of the barn raisings after a neighbor's barn burned down.

Unfortunately, we are not that supportive when it comes to participating in support of an ongoing emergency - the constant shortage of BLOOD. Less than 3% of Americans donate blood regularly.

Yesterday I registered donors and donated blood at in Springfield as I do every two months as part of a blood drive the West Springfield Rotary Club holds. If you are able to donate blood you can find a location for your area at Red Cross Blood. Although it would be nice, it is not important to know to whom you gave blood. It is important to know you have given the gift of life to a fellow human being.
