About Springfield's West Springfield Village

The Sydenstricker School in Springfield VA was the last one room school house in operation in Fairfax County. It closed in 1939 but the building is still used today and maintained as a community meeting hall by the Upper Pohick Community League. The belfry contains the original school bell purchased in 1920's from the Sears Roebuck store in Alexandria.

When you walk around the building and see the belfry and bell on the post you can imagine children laughing and headed into the school house. The Upper Pohick Community League applied this week to get the school placed on the National Registry of Historic Places hopefully protecting the building for many years to come.

Every two months members of the West Springfield Rotary Club cooperate with and assist the INOVA Hospital System with the registration of people who want to donate blood.

Hospital systems and the American Red Cross are in constant need of blood to replenish the already short supply.

1. Late Tuesday afternoon I visited the studios of Channel 10 which is the public access channel for the 1 million residents of Fairfax County. I've known for two months I was going to be the sole person interviewed for a full 30 minute television presentation. As this year's president of the West Springfield Rotary Club I answered questions about my club's community service programs, our growth plans, why people should consider membership and the impact of Rotary International's worldwide programs. It was an interesting challenge.

Obviously, it was not 30 minutes of The Life and Times of Karen Kruschka, but I did have an opportunity to mention that, as a REALTOR®, membership in Rotary provided a clear path to community service as a constructive way to Pay It Forward. I know full well I am making a significant difference in my world.

The program will air in June and I will receive a copy that I can upload to YouTube.

2. Earlier in the day I received a phone call from Fox News. The reporter had seen my hyper-local blogs and wanted my opinion on the effect, if any, of the large number of foreclosed properties in Prince William County that were being neglected. He was particularly interested in what impact it would have on overall neighborhood values. My blogs generate interest by the press, especially electronic media

West Springfield Village is located on Rolling Road approximately halfway between Old Keene Mill Road and the Fairfax County Parkway. The 426 homes in the subdivision are one of the original Springfield communities built by Richmarr in the period between 1960 and 1980.

Commuting

• It is about a 15 minute drive to the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station. Proximity to the Franconia-Springfiled Metro makes it an ideal location for commuting to the Pentagon, Washington, DC and all National Capital Area work centers
• Metrobus Route 18S to the Franconia-Springfield Metro is available on Rolling Road
• The Cardinal Plaza Slug Line (on Old Keene Mill Road just east of Rolling Road) has service to all DC locations and the Pentagon
• Metrobus Route 18H provides Pentagon service on Rolling Road at Greeley Boulevard - the trip is approximately 25 minutes
• Fort Belvoir is approximately 15 minutes via Rolling Road to US1

Schools and Library

• Children are in the West Springfield High School Pyramid. You can locate the schools for a specific address at Fairfax County Public School Locator
• Approximately 10 minutes from the Pohick Regional Library

Shopping

• Two neighborhood shopping centers, Old Keene Mill Center and Cardinal Forest Plaza are approximately 5 minutes from West Springfield Village at the intersection of Old Keene Mill and Rolling Roads - one has Whole Foods and the other has Giant Foods

Recreation

• Audrey Moore Rec Center in Wakefield Park with its year round pool and gymnasium plus a myriad of other sports and activities is approximately 15 minutes
• Wakefield Skate Park is also in Wakefield Park next to the Audrey Moore Rec Center
• South Run Rec Center with year round pool, exercise facilities and other activities is within approximately 15 minutes. It has a connecting trail to Burke Lake Park
• Burke Lake Park with golf course, camping, picnic areas, small boat rental, fishing, carousel, miniature train and ice cream parlor is approximately 15 mimutes
• Lake Accotink Park with small boat rental, fishing and picnic facilities is within 15 minutes.
• Pohick Bay Golf Course - an 18-hole public course is approximately 15 minutes
• Pohick Bay Park with boat launch to the Potomac River, camping and picnic facilities is approximately 15 minutes
• Laurel Hill Golf Course - 18-hole public is approximately 15 minutes
