Making lunch at Hilda Barg

As I mentioned previously, Covenant Presbyterian regularly provides service for the residents at the Hilda Barg Homeless Shelter. Last week we met with them and took family and individual photos, edited them and had them framed.

Last night, we were scheduled to cook their dinner and make their lunch for today. As you can see in the photo above we arrived late afternoon and worked with the smaller children on holiday crafts. We also used this second service opportunity to give the families their photos before dinner. It is moments like this that make me realize how fortunate I am to be able to put a smile on another person's face, especially when they are stressed due to their difficult circumstances. It truly is a Christmas gift to myself.

Alpaca

Earlier this year Arthur and I visited farms during the annual Prince William County Farm Tour. One lovely and very popular spot is an alpaca ranch. Alpaca are very sociable and willing to be petted. We were told the action above will now be performed by the other alpaca - it is a form of friendly play - nothing more, nothing less, not even scratching an itch.

Touring farms is not the only recreational activity that is very popular in Prince William County. We have lots more:

Unemployment statistics are very favorable
- 9.1% United States
- 6.2% Virginia
- 6.0% National Capital Area
- 5.2% Prince William County
Money Magazine recently recognized Prince William County as 13th in the nation for job opportunities.
16th in the nation for per capita income according to the US Census Bureau.
"Prince William County became one of only 73 local jurisdictions out of 17,669 in the nation (0.4 percent) to hold AAA status from Standard & Poor's, Fitch and Moody's" according to the Fall 2011 Prince William County Report.

As a developing county officials are able to take the necessary steps to attract business to our area. Traffic in the National Capital area has a well deserved reputation as being among the worst in the country.
Businesses relocate here so their employees don't have to spend a substantial part of their day commuting. New housing is being built in planned communities throughout the county. Roads, local bus service, schools and shopping facilities are regularly added or improved. However, policies are in place to insure there is undeveloped land available for recreational pursuits.

I took my first picture of the home below in 2010. Woodbridge Fixer Upper

Yesterday, I happened to be driving down the same road and something about the home caught my eye. As you can see, the screen door has been freshly painted recently and has new screening.

Since doors are the gateway to the homes' interior I wonder if the "improvements" were made in anticipation of going on the market. If so, it will take more than a little lipstick to improve its' appearance and maximize the owner's net sales price.

Civil War cannon

2011 marks the 150th anniversary of the First Battle of Manassas during the Civil War.

Prince William County and the cities of Manassas amd Manassas Park have scheduled numerous commemorative events during the year throughout the area.

The Prince William Community Band will perform a sesquicentennial concert featuring music of the Civil War era at Connaughton Plaza

Community bands were the musical centerpiece in many a town across the US in the mid to late19th century and early 20th centuries. It is an art form that suffered a decline after World War I, but is alive and well again throughout the country. There is no doubt it will be an exciting musical presentation
