The Brentsville Union Church was completed in 1874 and is still available for worship services by local religious groups. The church is part of the 28 acre Brentsville Courthouse Historic Centre. The church, 1822 courthouse, 1822 jail and 1922 one room schoolhouse are now owned and maintained by Prince William County.
There is a rope from the belfry to the sanctuary near the front door. The bell was rung to signal worship and other events. It is said the original bell was removed for use elsewhere by Presbyterians - I didn't know "my people" would do that sort of thing :)
Architectural lines in rural America during the 18th and 19th century were clean, symmetrical and functional. Their simplicity was the source of their beauty.There are probably thousands of them standing and serving throughout the country today.
Even the decorative features of the windows and doors were understated.
Before Arthur and I entered the sanctuary we knew we would see more of the style that was so typical of rural America, revealing the strength of simple functionality that was the foundation and building blocks of the country.
