  • Blood relationship enabled Robert Carter III to inherit all 70,000 acres in 1745
  • In 1776 he named the Prince William site Cancer Plantation
  • In 1791 he filed a "Deed of Gift" in District Court, setting in motion the gradual emancipation of 452 of his slaves. making him the largest slave owner to voluntarily free his slaves in American history
  • In 1830, Carter III's grandson, Benjamin Tasker Chinn inherited Cancer Plantation and moved in with his 10 slaves
  • In 1832 he built the manor house, dairy, smokehouse and slave quarters

Villas Were Built In Virginia As Early As 1825

Historic Huntley

Land holdings of George Mason IV came as far north as what is now known as Hybla Valley and Huntley Meadows Park

Thomson Mason, a grandson of George Mason, built the home pictured above on the property in 1825. The house, now known as Historic Huntley, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Virginia Landmarks Register, and the Fairfax County Historic House Inventory. Mason family ownership of the land lasted into the early part of the 20th century.

Individual sections of the land were sold for family farms, but eventually the federal government acquired the land closest to the home using it as a highway materials test site and World War II anti-aircraft battery.

When the federal government declared the land surplus it was deeded to Fairfax County. "Historic Huntley" was set aside and is now maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority. However, it has not been restored and is not open to the public.

If The Washingtons Invited You To Mount Vernon

Karen Kruschka - Prince William, Fairfax ,Stafford County VA Real Estate Service: Real Estate Agent in Woodbridge, VA

Mount Vernon Drawing

Mount Vernon,"a modest farm house", was built between 1741 and 1742. George Washington began an expansion when he acquired the home in 1757. Many people believe the columned and covered piazza seen in the painting by Francis Jukes (1745-1812) at the right is the "front door" to the Mount Vernon mansion. In fact, it is the "back porch" facing east and overlooking the Potomac River.

Mount Vernon Entry

Arthur and I moved to Mount Vernon when we first moved to VA and lived about a mile from the west entrance on Old Mount Vernon Road.

Guests of the Washingtons arrived by carriage and entered along a 3/4 mile drive to the front entrance on the west side of the mansion. We passed it four or five times a week for quite a few years before we moved to Prince William County in 1985. When you stop at the gate pictured above you can read a placard that provides details about its' history.

Mount Vernon Fence Script

Peeking through the fence is as far as we could go. That probably would have been true when President and Mrs. Washington were in residence, also. We always felt better knowing it is what 18th century guests saw as well.

Mount Vernon Fence View

Of course, once the gates swung open the guests had a decidedly better view than the Kruschkas. It is the gate President and Mrs. Washington would have used on their way to Pohick Church

Happy Hanukkah

Karen Kruschka - Prince William, Fairfax ,Stafford County VA Real Estate Service: Real Estate Agent in Woodbridge, VA

Menorah

As you may know, today is the first of the eight days of Hannukah, also known as the Festival of Lights. Arthur and I send holiday wishes to our friends, clients and associates of the Jewish faith. The strong bond between the American Jewish and Christian communities is one that has been and will remain strong - it embodies the best of America's traditions.
