Spreading Gossip about Barre Street in Montpelier
I learned in 2nd grade that it's not good to spread gossip. When I was a teacher (and yes, I taught 2nd grade), I tried to get the kids to understand the same concept.
Nonetheless...
Word on the street in Montpelier--and I've heard this from more than one person--is that Barre Street, long the gritty, shuffling along cousin to The Meadow, College Street, and Liberty Street, is the new cool Bohemian place to live.
Think of it as the Jamaica Plans of Montpelier.
Now I'm not saying that Barre Street is without flaw. But, if you look past a couple of interesting properties with accumulations of various holiday decorations, my source might be on to something. Kismet is a great restaurant. River Station condos have added a little more critical mass to the area (in contrast to, say, the old granite shed that was there before). There's the senior center that's pretty outdated, but if that can be turned into apartments or something else that's a little more lively (and there's lots of talk about what to do with that building), then it could get interesting. It's close to town, and affordable. Houses are smaller too than in the other neighborhoods I mentioned above. I'm getting excited just thinking of it!
There's still plenty of...um...grit on Barre Street. But let's just see what happens. Let's just see...

Just Cuz It'll Go Down Yer Gullet Doesn't Mean Ya Oughta Put It Down Yer Popes!, Fats, Oils, and Greases are not just bad for your arteries and waistline, these things are also very bad for your private Septic System or public Sewer System. A Septic or Sewer System a overflow or backup can cause health hazards, damage home interiors, and can very will threaten the environment. An increasingly common cause of overflows is sewer pipes being blocked by grease. Grease gets into the sewer from household drains as will as from poorly maintained grease traps in restaurants and other businesses.

Just where dose grease come from?
Most of us know grease as the byproduct of cooking. But grease is also found in such things as: Meat fats, lard, cooking oil, shortening, butter and margarine, food scraps, baking goods, sauces, and dairy products. Too often, folks wash grease into the home's plumbing system, usually through the kitchen sink. Grease sticks to the insides of sewer pipes, both on your property and in the streets. Over time, the grease can very will build up and block the entire pipe.

The results could very will be:
Just Cuz It'll Go Down Yer Gullet Doesn't Mean Ya Oughta Put It Down Yer Pipes!,You see its really best to keep, these kinds of materials out of the sewer system in the very first place.

I just read an interesting real estate oriented piece of history in Smithsonian magazine. Turns out that the land on which Arlington National Cemetery sits was once the property of Robert E. Lee. Lots of people probably knew that. Actually, it belonged to his wife, but hey, he married well.
Not long after the war began, Lincoln (spurred by a fellow named Meigs) had the idea that any property abandoned by people siding with the Confederacy would be assessed a special tax. Oh, and the tax could only be paid in person. Oh, and the person could only be the owner.
Can you imagine Robert E. Lee waltzing up to the courthouse to pay the special assessment. He wasn't exactly well-liked in the North at the time.
Mary Custis Lee (his wife and "real" owner) had to pay the tax. She sent a relative to do so thinking that money is money.
Well, money was indeed not money, and the Union essentially foreclosed on 1100 acres on the Potomac for the grand total of around $90. At auction, the only bidder was---you guessed it---the federal government. It went for something around $25,000 (though it was appraised around $30,000-I wonder if there were appraisal review companies in on that one.)
I got a little professional kick out of reading that story.
