Right now somewhere in Springfield, Vermont there is a Fox sitting with pricked ears on top of a mountain.

There is a Black Bear having some quiet time

There are two Eagles talking over where to have their family

There is a Moose enjoying life

Around here, connecting with nature is not difficult and it comes quite naturally. You can do it just by simply going bird watching, hunting, fishing, hiking, canoeing, or just out taking photographs.

According to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife, there are no less than 84 wildlife management areas throughout the State of Vermont, to see and enjoy wildlife. There are also several National Wildlife Refuges. The Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, for an example, attracts large flocks of migratory birds to it's quiet waters and wetlands. On the shores of northern Lake Champlain, you'll more than likely to see an abundance of waterfowls, such as mallards, black ducks, wood ducks, ring-necked ducks, and snow geese.

When you and your family are out enjoying nature, remember

Don't use lead fishing sinkers. Lead sinkers are deadly to loons and waterfowls.

Be sure to leave nature just as you found it. Don't even carry bait or bucket water from one waterway to another. Doing this can lead to the invasion of non-native species.

Control your pets at all times.

Stay on designated hiking trails.

Always be careful with your campfires.

Most of all, be sure to get out and enjoy the outdoors! And let's keep Vermont a haven for wildlife and wildlife lovers.

VINS Nature Center

Get eye to eye with North America's finest collection of birds of prey, you can see Eagles, Hawks, Falcons and Owls.

They have exciting New exhibits and programs going on.

Discover the hands-on Tree House Exhibithang out with wild, weird and whimsical creatures who call the tree's their home.

You can wander miles of interpretive walking trails aiong the Ottauquechee River

Kids and Adults have a lot of fun walking the trails at VINS!

You can watch the Wildlife Services Staff nurture injured birds.

There is a beautiful butterfly and hummingbird garden for folk's to meander through.

There are daily live raptor demonstrations put on. At 11:00 A.M., 1:30 P.M., and at 3:30 P.M.

They have a very nice Nature Store for visitors. It's open 7 days a week. From 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

They have a covered picnic area for your enjoyment.

The VINS Nature Center is located just 1/4 mile west of the Quechee Gorge, on Route 4, in Quechee, Vermont. From I-89 take Exit 1 to Route 4 West.

Admission - Adults: $9.00, Seniors ( 65 plus ) $8.00

Youth ( 3 - 18 ) $7.00, Children 2 and under are free

VINS members free

Special Rate days

On 16 August and the 17 all Vermont Residents $5.00

On 23 August and the 24 all New Hampshire Resdents $5.00

Staining Fungi

The discoloration of wood by staining fungi happens just about exclusively in logs and very freshly sawn lumber. As a precaution, rough lumber is often dipped in a fungicidal bath right after sawing.

This is also called sap stains these fungi are most troublesome in softwoods, black color commonly called blue stain. Now in hardwoods, staining fungi just may create a blue or even a brown hues. The stains result from dark hyphae that permeate sapwood in search of stored starches and sugars. You can also spot inactive blue stain in doors alot of times, millwork and other pine products. Active staining fungi will sometimes discolor the bottom rails and the corners of pine windows that are kept wet from condensation. Now you will find these stains are indelible and will not wash off.

Staining fungi in their search for food, will destroy certain wood cells. This will result in the wood becomeing more permeable, and even more susceptible to decay. The strength and toughness are also slightly reduced as well.
