HIGH PRAIRIE, Washington

Amy McAllister REALTOR® Hood River, Oregon: Real Estate Brokerage in Hood River, OR

High Prairie is located in Klickitat County Washington. It is about 10 miles North West of Lyle, Washington. High Prairie is an isolated neighborhood bordered on the north and west by the Klickitat River, on the east by Swale Canyon, and on the south by the Columbia Mountains. Goldendale is 25 miles to the east. Farming and stock raising have been the principal industries.

Indians roamed the area in the early days and there were several farms on High Prairie owned by Indians. The first white settlers came to High Prairie in 1877. Mr. Chester Parshall and a young man named John Varker, started out from California, to go farther north and find a location for their new homes. They came by wagon to The Dalles, Oregon then traveled to the Washington side of the Columbia River. They stood on the Columbia mountains and looked over into what later became known as High Prairie. It was a land about ten miles square, hills and canyons and valleys, with timber scattered around.

I currently have a listing in High Prairie. It is 20 acres of dividable land with a house, 2 barns, meadows, oak trees, and 3 seasonal creeks. The price is $379,000. http://www.rmls.com/ #7026212 http://amymcallisterrealty.vflyer.com/3/index.html

Joslyn House B & B

Amy McAllister REALTOR® Hood River, Oregon: Real Estate Brokerage in Hood River, OR

The Joslyn House Bed & Breakfast is located in Bingen, WA. For those who have never heard of Bingen, it is across the Hood River Bridge into Washington State, then about 2 miles East on State Route 14. The Joslyn house in the Columbia Gorge was built in 1860 by Erastus Joslyn.

Erastus and Mary Joslyn were early pioneers in this area. When their first house was destroyed by members of the Yakama Nation, they built what is now known as the Joslyn House to replace it. The Joslyns raised fruit and vegetables. Early visitors came up the Columbia River by sternwheeler river boat. Erastus Joslyn named the White Salmon River, taught the Native American inhabitants, and held Sunday worship services for them. The Joslyns also provided travelers a free room for the night.

The second owners of the Joslyn House were the Suksdorfs. They were a prominent local German family. The Suksdorfs named the town of Bingen and expanded Joslyn House.

It is not my listing but the Joslyn House is currently for sale for $1,200,000 on the RMLS-Regional Multiple Listing Service http://www.rmls.com/ listing #7078387
