There are several national fish hatcheries located in the Columbia River Gorge. These fish hatcheries have helped the salmon populations recover in the Columbia River since at least 1960. The Carson National Fish Hatchery releases more than two million smolts (young salmon) annually. The Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery raises more than 15 million Tule Fall Chinook Salmon annually. The Little White Salmon Fish Hatchery has an underwater viewing area which is enjoyed year round. The mile long entrance road begins at the west end of the bridge over the Little White Salmon River at Drano Lake which is located 12 miles east of Stevenson, WA.

The best time to visit the Carson National Fish Hatchery which is located 14 miles north of Carson, WA on Hwy 30 is from May-August. You can view adult salmon returning up the ladder.

You can watch the fish being spawned in mid to late Sept at the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery located 16 miles east of Stevenson, WA on Hwy 14.

I liked the view of the Oregon hills with layers of fog. I took these pictures last week from Stevenson, WA where I've been spending a lot of time working with my husband on finish carpentry in a new house. This is the view from the master bedroom.
