Buyers aren't LIARS . . . they just got HUGGED!

Valerie Baker - Spokane Realtor®: Real Estate Agent in Spokane, WA

It is a common saying among Realtors that “buyers are liars.” Buyers will insist that they need four bedrooms and a totally updated high-end kitchen. They MUST be on a cul-de-sac where the children can ride their bikes.

Next thing you know, they stop into an Open House on a Sunday afternoon and can’t wait to make an offer on a 1910 Craftsman home with three tiny bedrooms and a kitchen that even Mrs. Cleaver would call ancient! It sits up on a hill on a busy arterial . . . picture little Billy flying down that driveway screaming “look Mom, no hands!”

SO, what gives? Don’t even try to figure it out! This has nothing to do with rational, logical thought processes. It has EVERYTHING to do with those warm, fuzzy things called HUGS! It happens to the best of us.

The funny thing about houses is they don’t even need arms to hug you. Walk inside that front door of a certain home and you are enveloped by a sense of well being. It really has nothing to do with the home itself and EVERYTHING to do with the buyer’s past.

Each of us has our own triggers that will make us leave reason behind. Does a sturdy old farmhouse take you back into Grandma’s cozy kitchen where you could do no wrong and the food tasted so good?Country Kitchen

Does a 1970’s split level have you singing “Kumbaya” as you reminisce about the great teenage parties in your friend Mary’s family room?

Does the overgrown, slimy pond in the backyard trigger some memory of summer camp? There is just no telling what will reach out and grab you . . .or a buyer!

So, buyers beware, there are memories lurking in them there houses! And if one hugs you, you may just find yourself there forever!

This blogpost was inspired by my new listing that I fell in love with the moment I set foot on the property! When I stepped inside the door, I was hugged so hard I could hardly breathe. You see, I lived in an old farmhouse just like this one on Bridges Road until I was seven years old. We lived upstairs and my grandparents lived downstairs. So many memories of a simpler time on Grandpa’s farm . . . hugs in every corner! :)
