For the long week end we decided to stay close to home and explore and hike nearby.

We tackled the Bridal Veil Falls near Index Washington. Much to our surprise, there was a parking lot at the trail head. Even more surprising was that the State wanted money to park out in the wilderness. We parked down the road a ways.

We had read that it was an easy hike, and one good for children. That bode well for a comfortable day hike.

Here are the directions, as found on the Washington Trails Association web site: “Start by following an old road lined with mossy maples and alders. Cross a series of minor tributaries. Pretty in their own right, Bridal Veil Falls, Index Washington

especially after a storm, these streaming streams are also eroding away chunks of tread. Next, along a thickly forested slope, the trail gradually ascends. At 1.7 miles, just after leaving the old roadbed, come to a signed junction (elev. 1200 ft.). The trail left continues on, heading to "secret" Lake Serene tucked in a deep basin beneath the spires of Mount Index.

For Bridal Veil Falls, head right. The falls is 0.5 mile away. Just follow the roar, using a series of short switchbacks and stairways that steeply climb toward the tumult. Cross several side creeks and expect to get your feet wet. Be sure to pause for Bridal Veil Falls, Index Washington

a moment or two to look back at the Skykomish Valley spread below. One last grunt and reach the first of two waterfall viewing platforms.Bridal Veil Falls. Emanating from beneath the mountain's austere crags, the tiered and tumbling cataract drapes over granite slabs.”

Waterfalls Northwest call it accurately: “expect to get wet, especially when the falls are flowing at their peak. The spray that comes off the falls is tremendous, especially at the middle falls.” Bridal Veil Falls, Index Washington

We enjoyed the chatter and the banter as we passed groups of people and they passed us. There were families, couples, groups of young people, friends. One guy was hiking all alone with a massive camera. Most had pocket cameras, like me.

We got to the top and got wet, as predicted. It was cool and refreshing after a steep hike. I especially enjoyed the hot shower and the massage in the lodge up there... (oh, I was dreaming...)

The hike down was easy and happy until the last half mile. We gave jovial encouragement to those on the way up. However, I was very ready for the hike to be over before it was. We finally got back to the car and sunk into the comfortable padded seats...

The Skykomish River, Index, Washington

This afternoon we found ourselves in the beautiful little town of Index, Washington. As we came into the town, a large school bus, painted gaily, was taking a group of river rafters up river for a rafting adventure.

We found a spot by the gurgling Skykomish River, and enjoyed the waves, the sound, the peacefulness, and the beauty.

Enjoy the beauty of the river and the mountains, as we did this afternoon.
