Harbor Days in Olympia WA September 2-4, 2011

Nancy Conner - Olympia/Thurston County WA: Real Estate Agent in Olympia, WA

Labor Day Weekend in Olympia, WA is always the time when you can see vintage tugboats as well as active working ones at the annual Harbor Days event. This is a real celebration of the maritime tradition of Olympia, and my favorite part is Sunday's tugboat races! Bet you thought of tugboats as sort of slow and plodding kinds of boats, didn't you? You should see them race!

Many of the tugboats offer tours during the Harbor Days event, so be sure and check them out at Percival Landing in downtown Olympia. And speaking of Percival Landing, this will also be a great chance to come admire the transformation of the rebuild of the boardwalk (Phase 1).

Sand Man Tugboat Olympia

There will be lots to see and do at the waterfront along Percival Landing and at Olympia's Port Plaza - and you can walk over to Farmer's Market for lunch or a snack, too. My all time favorite at Harbor Days is always a chance to see the vintage Sand Man tugboat, which is now basically a floating museum. Don't miss Olympia Harbor Days this Labor Day weekend!

Yesterday we went down to see how the sand sculptures were shaping up at this year's Sand in the City event in downtown Olympia. Friday is always the day that the teams are busy creating these amazing works of sand art and then Saturday and Sunday the sculptures are all on display to the public.

Sand in the City 2011

The teams were hurrying to finish up their work before the judging began, but it was clear that there are some really cool entries again this year. I can't wait to go back down tomorrow to check out the finished sand sculptures, as well as all of the fun things available for kids.

Sand in the City 2011

My granddaughter is looking forward to the touch tank where she can pat or even pick up some sea creatures; dig and make her own sand creations in the giant "sand box"; swirl the bubble wands around in the breeze off the bay. And just seeing the beautiful Budd Inlet, with sailboats gliding along - what a perfect setting for 2011 Sand in the City in Olympia!

You can check out the entire school year's calendar to see when there are school vacation days for the 2011-12 school year for Olympia School District.

Sand in the City in Olympia August 27 & 28, 2011

When you go to a sandy beach, do you immediately start wanting to build sand castles?? I know I do - though my "castles" usually consist of a bucket of sand packed down and then turned upside down, possibly "decorated" with some shells or twigs etc. Fun, but not exactly noteworthy.

Olympia's Sand in the City is a whole different type of sand fun though! The annual event for 2011 will be held this coming weekend, August 27th & 28th, and there will be twelve sand sculptures on display that will pretty much amaze you with their creativity, fine detail - really masterpieces of sand artwork.

The event benefits the Hands on Children's Museum and there will be plenty of fun for kids in addition to viewing the sand sculptures. If they like to get their faces painted, climb a rock wall, blow bubbles or maybe make a craft project, they will be well entertained.

Don't miss Olympia's annual Sand in the City - another great summer outing that all ages will enjoy!
