What's life like on a five-square-mile (thirteen-square-kilometer) patch of U.S. soil at the tip of a Canadian peninsula?
Well I just got back from Point Roberts, Washington a wee two day get-a-way to visit a dear friend that I hadn't seen for a long time. She was staying in a gorgeous cottage for a couple of weeks and invited me to come and join her.
As I quickly tried to wrap up and ‘put on hold' work.....I hopped in the car, and while only 2 hours from home......I slipped across the border into the tiny nether world of Point Roberts.......
A geopolitical oddity, it's a practical exclave of the United States, on the southernmost tip of the Tsawwassen Peninsula, just south of Delta, B.C. Interestingly enough it can only be reached from the the rest of the U.S. by travelling through Canada or crossing Boundary Bay.

Drawing the border between Canada and the U.S. along the 49th parallel was a great idea, except that when the line reached the ocean just south of Vancouver, it cut off a teeny weeny bit of Washington and left it hanging out in the Pacific all by itself! Although in some ways it would have made more sense to make this little area a part of Canada, that never happened... :-( Instead Icelandic farmers, fishermen and cannery workers and a few retirees began living on this 5 sq. mile peninsula.
The scenery is gorgeous and life is ridiculously peaceful...!
With a population of under 1400 people, and only 34% of those full time residents.....the majority of people staying at the Point are Canadians who use it as a cottage or holiday spot.
It's easy to be mesmerized by the natural beauty, miles of beaches, the pods of orcas...quaint cottages......and most of all peace and tranquility!
Needless to say I had a fabulous visit with my friend.........who with 8 children and 13 grandchildren......also was also having a much needed break..........we had a veritable 'gabfest'.......hiked, breathed in the fresh sea air.........and alas.....I'm back refreshed......! Well sort of...........:-)

Point Roberts has so much going for it. I am amazed with every exposure. This Sunday at Lily Point there will be a benefit for the Conservation Society. They have organized two 2.25 hikes. One led by Sheila Byers of Nature Vancouver will take you to the marine invertebrates at Lily Point and the sand flats of Maple Beach. The other benefit walk will be led by Craig Jacks the local naturalist with an emphsis on marine vistas, bald eagles, and old-growth trees. An event not to be missed. You need to be there at 10:30 a.m. at the end of APA Road in Pt Roberts. Be sure to tell us all about it if you go. Mt listings are at 660 Calhoun Dr and 297 Boundary Bay.

297 Boundary Bay Rd Point Roberts WA 98281
Beautiful views equipped with gorgeous beaches, orcas and soaring eagles Point Roberts is without doubt a serene place to live. Point Roberts is surrounded by views of Vancouver Island, San Juan Island, the Cascade Range, and Mount Baker. A small peninsula populated with less than 1,500 residents this area is still promising for business along with living. Although it is necessary to pass the Canadian border to access Point Roberts it is only a 23 mile drive through Canada. This particular home is 2,953 SF, 4B/2.75B. The home is beautifully crafted with a newly remodeled gorgeous kitchen for those who enjoy the culinary arts. If it isn't the kitchen that catches your eye wait till you see the hot tub room enclosed in glass. The yard, nearly 5 acres, is fluid in a variety of fruit tress, flower gardens and a forest in the back. Also on the 5 acres is a guest cottage, barn, and two horse paddocks. And yes, it does have it's own view of the San Juan Islands. The home is conveniently located near the Pt Roberts Golf & Country Club and Marina Resort. If you are a beach lover than this property is well worth checking out. No one wants to miss out on their own little slice of heaven.
