A day Remembered.
In the distance shots were fired at the enemy and returned in haste.
Men fell. The cannon thundered.Music played on as the beat of war sounded.
The hot metal seared the air and landed with a thud shattering its way though life.
The smoke lifted and fell permeating the air around with a pungent odor.
In a moment it all seemed so quiet. The vision remained only to be twisted into the memories of the past.
Too late to cry and to fresh to forget.
My family and I attended a Civil War re-enactment this weekend. As we watched the battle for Vicksburg I noticed this man next to me. He wore a beret with a Screaming Eagle.
My attention turned from the battle to preserve the Union at all costs ( and they were costly over 620,000 Americans died) to this man who as the others were recreating, was once himself most likely giving all he had for all of us. The memories that must have poured through his mind as the gun smoke settled into thin air were stretched across his face.
I wanted to talk with him but I felt he was somewhere else. Somewhere I would never want to go, and a place he must travel everyday.
War lasts a lifetime. After the final event those that remain are left with the memories.
Thank You to each and every soldier who has literally given their life for my family and myself. Thank You.
