Found in Benton County Washington, Prosser is a relatively small town with a population of about 4,838 according to the census of 1st April 2000. Located along the Yakima River, the city has only one zip code which is 99350. Agriculture and related activities including food processing and wine tourism form the backbone of Prosser city’s economy.

For a long time, Prosser was occupied by Native Americans whose main activity was fishing along the Yakima River. The area was by then referred to as “Tap tut” which meant rapids.

In the year 1879, Colonel William Prosser surveyed the area and five years later he built his home in the area. In 1884, the Northern Pacific Railroad Company laid lines through the area and a year later  Colonel Prosser filed a town plat which was named after him. However, after being elected the auditor of the Yakima County in 1886, Colonel Prosser relocated to North Yakima. Although he is famed for starting the town of Prosser, Colonel Prosser never returned to it after his relocation to North Yakima.

The city of Prosser is the county seat of Benton County. A referendum was held in Nov 1912 to determine whether to relocate the county seat to either Kennewick or Benton City and even though Kennewick received the most votes, it didn’t satisfy the “60 percent of the votes” requirement and as a result, Prosser has remained the county seat to date.

Prosser city has a thriving wine industry and due to its strategic location on the Yakima River, thus facilitating irrigation. The city also has an easy access to the highways in the area. A number of wineries within the Yakima Valley Appellation are found in Prosser and wine tourism is well developed in the area.
