I'm not sure why traffic this past week into Seattle from the southend sucked. I've re-evaluated my commute time contiuum window and the variables are challenging my math. Lately, trying to guess how long it's going to take to get from A to B is a total crap shoot. I can leave at the same time every morning thinking, "Dude, you've got plenty of time."
Yet I might be 20 minutes early or 30 minutes late?
This morning it's raining (not a good sign) as I merge onto the freeway. I'm thinking about all my friends who moved up here from California. It's summertime after all and traffic should be lighter and it should be sunny.
In their behalf I'm listening to The Beach Boys. (In My Room, best song ever!).
Seriously though, my brethren from the 'south and sunny' are in the midst of a major challenge with the coastal weather patterns here and it's become a major topic of discussion.
It's not the rain that's bothering me this Thursday morning. I'm a native. It's just weather. The traffic lately? Now that's getting to me. I'm like so tired of driving up Interstate 5 this week at 10 to 20 miles an hour from mid Boeing Field all the way through downtown watching idiots jumping lanes like it's a video game.
I ask (talking to me, myself, and I of course),
"Do you actually think you're going to get there faster?"

Interstate 5 northbound from the Albro & Swift exit.
A little Freeway Etiquette goes a long way. Totally pacing me as I try to merge onto the freeway pretending you don't see me because you're completely absorbed in a conversation on your cellphone. Did you win something?
Or darting from lane to lane without blinkers forcing us to slow down even more to create a safety zone as we ponder the chaos theory of your next move and who's in jeopardy next?
One of my favorites is passing on the right using the lane that ends in 500 feet pretending you don't know that somehow. I create a space to let you in, but no that's not good enough. You run it out another 8 or 10 cars then jam it in just as the lane ends at the last possible second forcing all of us behind you to slam on our brakes.
Or the UW student late for his 8:00 am class who jumps in front of that fully loaded double trailer truck rig with 4 inches to spare between bumpers (in his sub-compact no less) as traffic is slowing down. The blue smoke rises thickly as we listen to 18 locked wheels hopping on concrete.
"Ah, the smell of burning rubber in the morning!"
Okay, one more... You've got to change lanes. You put your blinker on and let several cars go by when you see a good opportunity. You check your side mirror again just in time to witness this gal tromp on the gas and block your move. As you watch her go by she keeps her eyes absolutely straight ahead. No technical fowl here!

Northbound on 12th Ave... Capitol Hill.
Us regular commuters know when traffic sucks cooperation far exceeds competition. This morning my patience is in short supply and my internal dialogue is sounding like a sermon. I bail off the freeway at Albro & Swift and head up Beacon Hill. I won't save any time but I will enjoy what there is to see. I'm listening to Debussy's La Mer now, my blood pressure is dropping and hey, I'm doing 25 miles an hour!
This morning I won't be 20 minutes early.
