The Fate of White Center

White Center

What will the fate of White Center be? It's no secret that Seattle's "White Center" neighborhood is one you don't want to find yourself walking alone after dark. Dubbed "Rat City" by it's Northern neighbors, it's the laughing stock of the Seattle communities. The intersection of 15th and Roxbury alone, has seen two homicides in the last two years, including the most recent fatal shooting of Sweetheart Failautusi in August, of which 2 suspects still remain at large.

Last year, the White Center Community Development Association gave up to $10,000 to businesses in Downtown White Center in an effort to beautify the area and improve it's reputation. But it seems it's only gotten worse as crime rates in the area shot up an alarming 24% this year, making all of King County wonder about the fate of White Center

The rest of Seattle shows little interest in pumping tax dollars in to the North Highline area, making it less and less likely that there will be any substancial improvements to "Rat City". Last month, the Burien City Council leaned toward the possible annexation of White Center. However, the general consensus among Burien citizens is that it would bankrupt their city, making White Center King County's unwanted step-child of sorts.

The White Center Community Development Association is working on prioritizing a revitalization project for the business district and working on recruiting more law enforcement in the area. It will be interesting to see what happens to White Center, Seattle's toilet...

For now, the fate of White Center hangs in the balance of ne'er-do-wells and impoverished King County.

I've pulled up some active listings in the 98146 zip code which includes parts of Burien, Shorewood, Arbor Heights and White Center. I selected homes with 3 or more bedrooms, because that seems to be what people want. There are currently 32 homes in the area with 3 or more bedrooms for under $300,000. That amounts to a nice selection of homes in this entry level price range.

Baking For Love: JMJ Hearth Breads @ Holy Family in White Center

When I was at the White Center Jubilee Days Street Fair last weekend I happened across a booth, where two gentlemen were selling and sampling delicious whole grain breads. I was surprised to learn that they operate solely with the help of parishioners and volunteers, and that they sell their bread at Holy Family after masses. Here is their mission statement:

Our belief is based on God's revelation to man that human dignity is key to a happy, whole, and life-giving existence. Providing quality, wholesome bread is our way to keep this fact alive for everyone. Our volunteers are committed to upholding this standard. As a result, all of our fund raising will be from parishioners and referrals. In order to keep prices reasonable, we are accepting donations as well.

They also would love the help of volunteers; for more information please visit their website. You can also pre-order, as I understand that they tend to sell out of their bread quickly. I can totally understand why - the bread I sampled at the street fair was downright heavenly, pardon the pun!

While driving through White Center today, I saw something new and intriguing: a roasted corn stand on the corner of 15th Ave SW and SW 98th St. I had to stop and check it out. Now I'm sure that the four or five of you who read my blog are probably thinking that I have some sort of obsession with food and snacking. That would be correct. I do. And I absolutely L-O-V-E love roasted corn.

After circling the block several times to make sure they were open, I parked the car, walked up to the open air stand and surreptitiously snapped a photo of the A-board. Then it was my turn; being the economically prudent person that I am, I was so hoping this ear of corn was not going to set me back $5.00. As it turns out, they are only $2.50 - a pretty good price, I think, especially since you could eat two for $5.

Anyway, the friendly man behind the counter, surrounded by stacks of huge boxes of corn, asked me what I would like on it - Mayo? Cotijo Cheese? Lime? I just asked for butter, because what I really wanted was to dredge my corn in Chile & Lime powder. My mouth was on fire but it was soooo unbelievably delicious. As Budweiser would say, "Mr. roasted corn stand guy, we salute you!":)

Sokha Deli in White Center

Last Saturday while there was a break in the crazy weather, my son and I went for a drive to do some errands. We stopped for a beverage at Sokha Deli, a semi-new spot in White Center. They serve many types of beverages including Bubble Tea, espresso and my favorite, which they call Asian coffee(french press coffee blended with sweetened condensed milk.)

I ordered a Mango Bubble Tea, which is blended with ice and served with your choice of tapioca rice balls or 'jelly'(gelatin) on the bottom. My son ordered a Sprite, but took over my drink once he saw how delicious it looked.

The deli also serves sandwiches and an array of main dishes. It looked and smelled really good, and I look forward to having lunch in there sometime.

Sokha Deli is located on 16th Ave S.W. just south of S.W. Roxbury St. in White Center.
