Esther Short Park

Here's a little factoid I stumbled across today: Vancouver pioneer and early settler, Esther Short, bequeathed the first park in all of Washington to the city of Vancouver in 1855. This very same park has always bore her name and is currently the centerpiece of a vibrant downtown Vancouver, Washington.

Records indicate Esther was one of the first settlers to make a claim and that was in 1845. That claim was for 640 acres and I've heard stories (thank you Pat Jollota) of the hardships and struggles she and her husband endured to maintain their property.

Esther is just one of many amazing characters in the history of Vancouver, Washington. No doubt much of the current city is influenced by who lived here before.
