Christmas Traditions From My Family To Yours
~ The After Christmas Tree! ~
If your Christmas Tree is beginning to have more needles on the floor than on the tree, you might be wondering when the city of Jefferson is picking up trees!
The Jefferson WI Streets Department will begin picking up trees at 7:00 a.m. on the following dates;
January 9th
January 16th
Be sure all ornaments and tinsel are removed from the tree, as these items clog the brush chipper.
However,....
Let me share another beautiful Christmas Tradition my family does every year.
The After~Christmas Tree!
1. Carefully un-decorate the tree putting all decorations away neat and tidy, labeling every box. Don't worry about all those needles that are popping off left and right!
2. Carry the tree to a place outside that is at least somewhat shielded from the harsh winter wind. Keep it in the stand!
3. Collect pine cones, cotton and jute string, peanut butter, your favorite suet recipe, toilet paper tubes, popcorn, berries, apples, & oranges.
4. Carry all this outside and decorate your "Christmas is for the Birds (and other wildlife)" after Christmas, Christmas tree!
5. Sit inside sipping cocoa, watching the animals enjoy the tree and reading the following books;
Don't worry if you miss the Christmas Tree Pick-up Dates!
The tree's get chipped up and are spread around in city landscaping and our parks!
~ Or ~
Laura, I love real trees especially balsams. I have a tradition of saving this years Christmas tree somewhere out of sight until New Year's Eve ONE YEAR LATER and then burning it (outside) on New Year's Eve at midnight...it gives off warmth...lots of light and provides a few short minutes (it's very dry and goes up in a flash) of reflection on the previous year.

Go to Sleep My Little One,.... My Real Ghost Story.
Laura S. Baker, Jefferson County WI
It was the middle of the night (of course it was, don't all ghost stories happen in the middle of the night?), when I heard what sounded like my little one playing with a friend in her room. Half awake, I opened her bedroom door.
I saw my little girl with toys set up around her and asked her why she was up playing in the middle of the night? She was quite young at the time, around 4 from my best recollection. My little one simply replied; "She won't let me go to sleep! She keeps on making me play. I told her I was tired!"
Just as my little girl said this, I stepped back to let another little girl pass through the door. It was the strangest feeling. It was just an automatic response. I didn't think about what I was doing, or even really realize exactly what was happening. I just did it.
She had long hair, light golden brown in color and an old fashioned below the knee length cream night gown on. As she passed me, heading into my bedroom doorway, I reassuringly moved my hand toward her lower back and motioned to pat her on her back and said; "Go ahead, off to bed."
Without missing a beat, I went to my little girl and tucked her back in. Kissing her on the forehead and said; "Goodnight, go to sleep my little one". It wasn't until I walked back toward my room, that the reality of what just happened truly hit me. I woke my husband up and told him of the event. He told me I was crazy.
The next morning when my little girl asked me where her friend went, he didn't think I was quite so crazy. Never before and never since then has anything like this happened. But that night, I have no doubt we had a visitor,... of some sort.

Oh just forget it!
I'm out of clever. I'm out of creativity! I'm out of fun. I'm out of energy! I've pulled out pillows. I've pulled out willows! I've packed and stacked,
and pulled and tugged. I've wracked my brain it's all a drain! I cannot do just one more thing. Not a consultation, not even a ring! I'm out of time. I'm out of rhyme! It's time to nest and get some rest.
Energy anew,.... wait until tomorrow!
So ask me why I keep on going,..The Devil Made Me Do It! It is that time of year afterall!
