Puempel's Olde Tavern is a fun tradition in New Glarus. One of the oldest buildings in the downtown area, the tavern is named for the Puempel family, two generations of the family owned and operated it. When Otto Puempel (Hazel had already passed away) retired it seems that he had 65 years in the business and his parents owned it before Otto and Hazel. At one time the Century 21 office next door served as the dining room. The new owmer, Chuck Bigler can tell you of theold days "when the building was also a boarding house, all rooms filled and hot home-cooked meals provided on a daily basis."
Maybe Chuck and Leesia can tell you the history of the dollar bills stuck in the high ceiling.
But I can tell you this: they ran a contest this summer and removed half of the dollar bills and donted the money to St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
The rules were as follows:
For $1.00 you could guess how much was donated and have the chance to win 50% of what ever we collect from the guesses from now until the winner is announced during Polkafest weekend in June. The other 1/2 collected will also be donated to St. Jude's. It ended up being $1,556 plus another $150 from guesses!
Many other intriguing features of Puempel'sincludes a The handsome original cherry wood bar. The hardwood floor served as a dance surface for hundreds of thousands of feet is still serving the same happy purpose.
Four giant colorful folk murals, painted on the tavern walls by a traveling artist in 1913, are still part of the old-time decor and enjoyed by patrons.
And you can create your own Bloody Mary's on Sundays 11 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., order a liverwurst sandwich for $4.00 with chips and a pickle (cheese extra).
ANd what kind of beer do they slide accross the original cherry bar? Why New Glarus Brewing Company Beer, of course-Spotted Cow and many others. People here, as well over Southeastern Wisconsin, are serious about New Glarus beer.
They even post this handy dandy chart on the website so you will know just what to expect.
I visited Peumpel's for the first time this summer with my friend Kim. I had lemonade but, perhaps, I may make a return visit to this fun old time tavern right in downtown New Glarus Wisconsin.
I was there on a real estate matter but, why didn't I stop in again afterwards?
New Glarus is just so darn cute as well as historic. I took this picture of the Town Hall. That's another story for another time!
If you are looking to sell your home, haven't been able to because it's not easy to make sense of the current market conditions in the greater Madison and south central Wisconsin area, give me a call and we can down and chat about your goals and dreams and how I can help. Here is a note from a happy client:
"After having had our home on the market eighteen months, we deceided to hire a professional. Barbara came, listened, offered a plan to us which she asked us to review. We agreed with her ideas. And within four days, we had an accepted offer! Thank you" --Robert and Julie

Being passionate supporters of both locally owned businesses and the environmental movement, we have been happy patrons of a New Glarus business for a while now. Recently, we have been hearing more and more people talk about this business, which warms our hearts.
Nikki's Diapers in New Glarus is an internet-based company turned brick and mortar store. We have had the pleasure of spending time with Nikki and her husband, and they are lovely people. They started the company from their home a number of years ago. Nikki wanted to fill the gaps for parents who were searching for quality cloth diapering items. Cloth diapering has come a long way from our grandparents' era, but you would never know it to see some of what is offered at the major national retailers. Niche businesses like Nikki's are helping make cloth diapering easier for parents of all budgets.
A few years ago, Nikki opened a retail space in New Glarus where she proudly offered not only cloth diapers and covers, but many other types of products as well. Now under the Planetwise umbrella, Nikki offers breastfeeding support items, babywearing slings and soft sided carrier, adorable soft baby shoes and legwarmers, wooden toys, reusable swim diapers, and much more. The New Glarus store has been one of our favorite places to stop in for a baby gift or supplies for our own children.
We want to congratulate Nikki because she recently opened a second brick and mortar retail location. There is now a Nikki's Diapers store in Madison as well, in Sauk Point Square on the corner of Old Sauk Rd and High Point for those of you familiar with the area. It is exciting to see a local business grow so well!
For those of you unfamiliar with Nikki's current New Glarus location, it is at 405 2nd St, just down the road from Tofflers and almost across the street from the park with the swimming pool. Hours there are limited to weekdays until 3:30, though the Madison store does have expanded hours. Otherwise, take advantage of her free shipping options and shop from home.
For those of you curious about cloth diapering, it really is easy. The environmental impact does make a big difference, in spite of what the studies commissioned by the disposable diaper companies claim. Go green and support a local business at the same time!
