Just think... we could have all be car salesman, not Realtors. For those of you who might not know what
Lustron Homes are, they were prefabricated porcelain enameled steel houses built in the late 40's. Small, affordable and billed as maintenance free homes, they were going to be the answer to that era's housing shortage. The builder and designer had big plans to sell thousands of these a week. These distinctive small ranches stood out from other housing of the day, as being futuristic for the time. Every inch of the interior was planned out with built-in bookcases, sliding pocket doors, and built-in room dividers. Both inside and out all surfaces were coved with two-foot square baked enamel panels. Offered in a range of pastel colors and neutral tones. They never needed to be painted again. The homes were to be sold by auto dealerships that purchased the rights to sell them throughout the country. Alas, only 2500 were ever built and sold and the company mysteriously went bankrupt, thus wiping out any chance for all of us Realtors to become car dealers!
I know of 2 existing homes in my area that are authentic Lustron homes. The photo taken is of one; it is currently for sale. Many preservationists are trying to make sure these homes do not meet a wrecking ball and that a small chapter of housing history is preserved.
