In an effort to raise awareness, a group of women from Fayette County in January 2010 started the 'Scarf It' project........The World's Largest Pink Ribbon Scarf. The scarf is in memory of Terri Lynne Treadway Massey. When Terri lost a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer at the age of 41, her friends and family helped her find peace by making a promise. That pledge — to take care of her three children — has inspired a scholarship fund to ensure that her children, and other children who’ve lost a parent to breast cancer, will go to college.
Supporters of Terri’s Tribute, a scholarship fund for the children of Terri Massey and other children who’ve lost moms to breast cancer, are knitting the world’s longest pink ribbon scarf to honor and memorialize the survivors and victims in breast cancer.
The “World's Largest Pink Ribbon Scarf” is being assembled at Tamarack. To date, Tamarack has over 2228 feet, nearly 90 women and one man from 15 states have contributed to the scarf. The goal is to have a half mile of scarf completed by October 29. There are still pink yarn pieces being knitted and crocheted and will continued to be collected at Tamarack.
At Tamarack during October, volunteers may add to the scarf by working on it while they visit or by taking home instructions and sending in pieces as they finish. Tamarack provides classes for knitting or crocheting. Cindy Whitlock, Director of Marketing said, “We have pink acrylic yarn, knitting needles and crochet hooks, but people are welcome to bring their own, or donate to our collection. Many people may want to start their work here and take it with them. Pieces may be dropped off at Tamarack daily from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will be added onto the existing scarf."
Scarf Instructions:
Use 100 percent acrylic yarn in any shade of pink.
To knit:
Size 13 needles, Cast on 25 stitches, Knit every row until the end of the skein. Bind off all stitches and knot the end.
To crochet:
Size G hook, 25 loops, Single crochet one row
“We expect about 39,000 guests from 25 different states and Canada during October. We’re working on national media coverage and authentication by Guinness. However, the scarf stands on its own merit, a record-sized depiction of love, inspiration and hope for all our sisters,” said Whitlock.
