What Would You Name YOUR House?
Here is a house that I just learned about this past week. It was built by George Washington's youngest brother, Charles, back in 1780.
Charles Washington surveyed Charles Town and named all of the streets. 'Happy Retreat' is what he named his home.....and yes, George Washington slept there on a regular basis.
A newly formed group called 'The Friends of Happy Retreat' is raising funds to purchase this property in order to secure it for the public. I sincerely wish them well in their efforts. ( heck, I'd LOVE to tour this house!)
I visited Charles Town last week while accompaning my Mom on her trip home. Mom grew up in Burkittsville, home to the Blair Witch movie. (Remember that?) I enjoyed the trip to Burkittsville, but I have to admit I was intrigued by the house named, 'Happy Retreat'.
To hear it's name, just made me feel good.
I enjoyed my brief time in Charles Town. I especially enjoyed the Charles Town Race Track. I had such a FUN time watching the horses and trying to pick the winners!
This experience made me think about naming my house. My home is a 'Happy Retreat' to me, but that name is taken. Perhaps I could call it 'Chrissy's Castle' or 'Happy Home'. I know these names don't roll off the tongue as easily as 'Happy Retreat', so I need to work on this a bit more.
I wonder if my home will still be in good condition and still standing 231 years from now? What did Charles Washington wonder about back in 1780? This is so much to consider, isn't it?
We should all be so lucky to have a 'Happy Retreat' at some point in our lives.
So ----- what WOULD you name your house?
