What Would You Name YOUR House?
Here is a house that I just learned about this past week. It was built by George Washington's youngest brother, Charles, back in 1780.
Charles Washington surveyed Charles Town and named all of the streets. 'Happy Retreat' is what he named his home.....and yes, George Washington slept there on a regular basis.
A newly formed group called 'The Friends of Happy Retreat' is raising funds to purchase this property in order to secure it for the public. I sincerely wish them well in their efforts. ( heck, I'd LOVE to tour this house!)
I visited Charles Town last week while accompaning my Mom on her trip home. Mom grew up in Burkittsville, home to the Blair Witch movie. (Remember that?) I enjoyed the trip to Burkittsville, but I have to admit I was intrigued by the house named, 'Happy Retreat'.
To hear it's name, just made me feel good.
I enjoyed my brief time in Charles Town. I especially enjoyed the Charles Town Race Track. I had such a FUN time watching the horses and trying to pick the winners!
This experience made me think about naming my house. My home is a 'Happy Retreat' to me, but that name is taken. Perhaps I could call it 'Chrissy's Castle' or 'Happy Home'. I know these names don't roll off the tongue as easily as 'Happy Retreat', so I need to work on this a bit more.
I wonder if my home will still be in good condition and still standing 231 years from now? What did Charles Washington wonder about back in 1780? This is so much to consider, isn't it?
We should all be so lucky to have a 'Happy Retreat' at some point in our lives.
So ----- what WOULD you name your house?

"Almost Heaven ~ West Virginia"
It's true.....it is almost heaven in West Virginia, along the Potomac River. I'm so happy to bring this photo to you. It is one of the first that I have taken with my new Nikon high definition Coolpix S4100 camera. I feel like the ripples across the river are within my reach, don't you? (no, this is not a commercial for Nikon, but I've got to tell you -- it takes much, much clearer photos than my old camera)
I cannot wait to take new, updated photos of all of listings! The new HD images will feature these properties oh-so-much-better! I believe my clients will be very, very pleased.
In the meantime, enjoy this beautiful blast from the past.........

I Found A Little Pink House in West Virginia!
I just returned from a trip to Maryland and West Virginia with my mom, Mary Jane Scruggs. She will turn 80 in September so it seemed fitting to take a trip down memory lane with her.
There are many stories to tell about the various towns and childhood memories that Mom shared with me this week. For instance, I took a touching picture of Mom sitting on the steps of her elementary school. I promise I'll post it a little later this week.
In the meantime, I wanted to show you an adorable little house that is located just outside of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. The first thing I noticed was the pink color.....the second thing was that it is a 'Women's Club' house. I'm a member of the Pennsville Women's Club, so I recognized the insignia over the door right away.
Regretfully, no one was there when I went to the door. I read the flyers they had posted. It looks like their club has some pretty awesome events planned. One in particular caught my eye. They are hosting a 'Meet and Greet' for the local political candidates. I thought it sounded like a valuable event, especially since the opportunity to meet the candidates in Pennsville does not exist.
Perhaps our Women's Club would consider hosting a similar evening? I believe it would be well-attended.
For those of you who may not be aware, Women's Club has it's international headquarters in Washington, DC. It is the largest group of woman in the world and they do a TON of good deeds and community service work.
I'm proud to be a member of Women's Club......and I was absolutely thrilled to stumble upon the Harpers Ferry chapter's pink headquarters.
It made my day!
