One day last week, My husband and I decided to visit the Sunshine Farm and Gardens in Renick, WV, off of Friars Hill Road. The drive was absolutely beautiful on this one lane road. Once off the main road, Route 219, we drove about 13 miles up and down mountain roads,
but once at the top (almost Heaven), the view was breathtaking.....

While picking apples, the farm's black horse named Morgan, wanted to have an apple snack ....... she stayed around eating apples and looking at us!

For the next two weeks, you can pick apples FREE at the Sunshine Farm and Gardens......we picked two bags of golden delicious apples...and I made a great tasting apple pie...

It was a fun afternoon and a most enjoyable ride to "almost heaven" ... the Sunshine Farm and Gardens.
I'll be writing a post on the Sunshine Farm and Gardens and the owner Barry Glick, so please check back!

Have you heard of The Crazy Baker® in West Virginia? If you haven’t, you have been missing some great pastries and other goodies! The Crazy Baker® is Hall Hitzig and his bakery is located in a small, rural community in Renick, West Virginia. I met with Hall last week at the small production bakery located a few miles from his mountain top home.
The facility is not fancy, and when you walk in the building you know it is a production facility. There is a sheeter for rolling the dough, large and small ovens, large work benches, trays, and small and large mixers. WOW the large mixers are huge …. Mixes 160 pounds of dough. Now that’s a lot of dough! (See the photos below).
Hitzig says, “I prepare my pastries with care, using traditional methods and only the best ingredients available. With a commitment to quality in every phase of my work, I choose quality European style butter, 100% pure natural vanilla, fresh local eggs, excellent imported chocolates, and high quality flours. These provide my basic palette. Combining these with an array of other select natural and organic ingredients, I make everything by hand.” He gets almonds from California; fruit from Switzerland, and uses chocolate from small farms in South America.
“This rural environment continually inspires me, and provides many of the ingredients I use regularly - blueberries, farm eggs, vegetables for quiche, and the honey I use in my granola, to name a few.”
Hitzig is originally from New York, moved to Renick and worked at the Lewisburg Airport as Director of Maintenance. He said, “I have baked throughout my life, culminating my professional career with the opening of The Crazy Baker® in August 2002.” He graduated as a pastry chef with honors from L’Academie de Cuisine in Gaithersburg, MD, and gained additional training at hotels and restaurants in the US and abroad. Hitzig has lived in Renick, WV with his wife, Amy and their three children since 1986.
When I asked Hitzig “Why are you called The Crazy Baker®” his answer was…………“Well, if you ask my wife, she will tell you that instead of starting a bakery at the age when many retire, I should have just bought a red sports car!”
"As The Crazy Baker®, I love and respect what I bake. My goal is to create delicious foods using the very best ingredients that I can purchase. I look for the freshest and most local products first, including organically raised ingredients." His primary goal is that customers enjoy what he creates. He is so sure of his products that for any reason you are not satisfied, he will refund you the purchase price.
The Crazy Baker® provides baked goods to individuals, gourmet shops, select groceries and fine restaurants, health food stores, coffee shops, and wineries, throughout the U.S.
The shop is closed the month of January. There are two other people working at the facility. Amy, The Crazy Baker's® wife, and love of his life, is also a partner in the business.
Jeff Kessler is a good friend and fellow passionate baker. Jeff and Hitzig share the bakery and its equipment here in the beautiful Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia.
Some of the Crazy Baker's® products are:
Granola is wholesome and delicious with nuts and fruits. I bought some at one of the local stores and just love it. I have it every morning over my yogurt…..it is delicious! It is also great on ice cream, and on a salad. Choose from Granola with cranberries (my favorite); or Granola with organic raisins.
PANFORTE - a great dessert that is a flat "cake" made with whole almonds, select spices, and candied citrus. It is really soooo delicious. I served a small wedge with a cup of coffee after dinner to my husband and he thought it tasted somewhat like fruitcake. I purchased one from a local store, and it comes hand-wrapped in beautiful rustic paper, secured with linen twine, and sealed with a red wax seal. I will be giving these as Christmas gifts.

Blondies and Brownies – chocolate, satisfying and a quarter pound each.

Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake – Oh my goodness…this is fantastic. A few weeks ago, we had dinner at the Stardust Café (owned by The Crazy Baker’s® sister) and for dessert, we ordered the sticky toffee pudding cake….it is rich, warm, and decadent. Hitzig says “In England, pudding refers to dessert; in this case, the pudding is a yummy date cake served with an unbelievable hot toffee sauce poured over it.”
Chocolate Almond Torte or Hazelnut Torte with Milk Chocolate Glaze
- flourless Tortes, made with freshly ground nuts and imported dark or milk chocolate. This will be my next purchase.
I’ve mentioned only a few of the products made by The Crazy Baker® and there are many more products, as well as, their special seasonal specialties, such as the traditional Italian bread, Panettone.
The Crazy Baker's® delicious products make wonderful gifts for the holiday season! The Crazy Baker® ships for you with personalized gift cards; just send your list of lucky gift recipients, and The Crazy Baker® does the rest! Your Christmas shopping made easy by The Crazy Baker®.

A great way to spend time with the family......blueberry picking.
Bring the kids and enjoy a few hours picking your own blueberries....at the White Oak Farm in Renick, West Virginia.
Or, pick some red raspberries, or both! Prices are so reasonable.
I heard one lady remark that she had eaten so many berries that the owners should weigh people as they come in and as they leave.

I have been hearing about blueberry picking at the White Oak Farm in Renick, West Virginia, since moving to Lewisburg in 2005. Well, today my husband and I went blueberry picking. We traveled from Lewisburg, to Renick, WV, to the White Oak Farm. This was a very scenic, 30-minute drive to Renick, a rural farming community. The day was warm, with an overcast sky with rain in the forecast.
Upon arrival at the White Oak Farm in Renick, we parked and walked over to the purchasing area. We were given buckets that had a rope that you tie around your waist, so your hands are free for picking. Each bucket had a plastic bag liner. Once you are finished picking, and go to check out, the bag is taken out of the bucket and weighed.
Our buckets were full of blueberries. We picked a total of 12 pounds and the cost was $19.20.
What I really liked is that the blueberry fields are netted to keep out birds. I also found out that this insures that the berries are allowed to reach their peak ripeness.

To the left are the berries we picked. I was informed to clean the berries, removing stems and leaves...BUT DO NOT WASH. Put them in freezer bags, and wash the berries when you are ready to eat them.
The owners, Max and Anne Robinson, use minimal pesticides, to produce naturally healthy berries. They are grown in mulched beds with mowed aisles that really made it easy for us to access the berries with ease.
The White Oak Farm also has raspberries, and we can't wait to pick some of these delicious fruits.
You can pick your own berries for $1.60 lb. ($9.60 a gallon) or they will pick for you for $2.85 lb.
For information on hours and location, contact Max and Anne Robinson at the White Oak Farm at 304-497-3577
Located 16 miles north of the Lewisburg; Interstate 64, Exit 169, follow US Rt. 219 North to Renick. White Oak Farm is 1 1/2 miles off of US Rt. 219 on Brownstown Road on the right.
Take a ride to the White Oak Farm in Renick, WV, and enjoy the beautiful scenic views...and pick some berries.....AHHHH they are absolutely ripe and delicious.

Timm Schleiff lives in Renick, West Virginia, and builds furniture that floats, i.e., custom wooden boats. His company is Schleiff Boatworks, LLC.
I met Timm and his father two years ago, and was impressed with the work they were doing on restoring a home in Lewisburg, WV. Timm is a remarkable young man. He was born and raised on his family's farm on Spring Creek in Renick, West Virginia, where he was home schooled. Now he builds and restores wooden boats. A dream come true.
Timm first became awestruck with boats at the age of 14 when he helped a friend restore a sailboat on the Chesapeake Bay. He learned woodworking skills and attention to detail from his father who is a custom home architect.
2007 marked the realization of a dream Timm has had for several years..... to live and work with boats,....wooden boats, and to continue the tradition of building functional, beautiful, well crafted wooden boats, both power and sail, traditional and modern.
His first boatwas built to the Nat Herreshoff ''Coquina'' design, and was well received at the 2007 Woodenboat show in Mystic, CT. Timm has also been featured in the Soundings Magazine! His 'Coquina' replica was on display at Helge Kahler's Sailor Craft Gallery located at 128 West Washington St, in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Click here for more information.
Timm has also received special recognition at the Georgetown Wooden Boat Showin Georgetown, SC, in October, 2007, for demonstrating workmanship excellence in the construction of his replica of Coquina.
Last year he exhibited both Coquina and Rescue Minor at the 35th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show in Meredith, NH on July 25-27, 2008. They both won 1st place in their classes (newly built power, and row/paddle/sail).
Timm just finished building a John Atkin designed "Ninigret Skiff" (22' outboard powered camp cruiser). She is powered by a Yamaha 40hp four stroke outboard mounted in a well. This boat was built on commission for a client in the northern Chesapeake Bay, christened "Sea Moose", and was launched on April 12, 2009.
Each spring, the Greenbrier Quarterly recognizes ten local artists who contribute to the vibrant art community and make the Greenbrier Valley the distinctive and admirable place that it is. Timm is one of the featured artists in this year's "Art Class 2008". The introduction states that this year "We boast an award-winning boat builder, an internationally trained fiber artist, and a professional dancer". Click here to read the entire article about Timm.
As an independent builder and his own boss, Timm has access to designs from many naval architects and designers. This, combined with the time, dedication, and flexibility to make the boat reflect the quality standard that he is known for, as well as meet his client's needs and budget, has made Schleiff Boatworks incredibly successful in the first couple of years. Bare hull to dockside delivery, and anything in-between, you can expect the highest standards of craftsmanship, top quality materials, and modern methods for a low maintenance classic wooden boat.
Check out Timm's website for all his current boat projects, new construction offerings, boats for sale, and especially "News and Events" for announcements on new commissions, shows, and events he will be attending soon.
When you choose a Schleiff boat, you buy not only a beautiful boat, but also the love of Timm's craft that went into it. Because each boat is built one at a time in a small, one man shop, each is unique and customized to fulfill your dreams.
Timm is known as the young boat builder in West Virignia. His dreams have definitely come true.
